Does Emdogain work?

Pediatr Dent

The Hospital for Sick Children, School of Graduate Studies, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Published: August 2009

Emdogain has been available commercially for just over a decade. It is used currently in clinical practice of periodontics and has been investigated in four clinical outcome studies of replanted teeth. This review covers the origin and concepts behind the use of this amelogenin derivative, the unique conditions associated with an avulsed tooth, and the laboratory and clinical characteristics of this material. Emdogain continues to be an experimental material for replantation applications.

Recombinant human amelogenin promotes wound healing by enhancing angiogenesis.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

November 2024

Institute of Biomedicine, College of Life Science and Technology, Jinan University, Guangzhou 510632, China. Electronic address:

The first barrier of the human body is the skin, and more serious harm may occur when skin wound healing is delayed. One of the components of enamel matrix proteins is amelogenin, which inhibits inflammation and promotes periodontal tissue regeneration. However, its role in skin wound healing and angiogenesis is inconclusive.

It is challenging to regenerate periodontal tissues fully. We have previously reported a heparan sulfate variant with enhanced affinity for bone morphogenetic protein-2, termed HS3, that enhanced periodontal tissue regeneration in a rodent model. Here we seek to transition this work closer to the clinic and investigate the efficacy of the combination HS3 collagen device in a non-human primate (NHP) periodontitis model.

: A derivative of the enamel matrix was used to speed up periodontal regeneration, including the formation of new cementum, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. In this study, human gingiva-derived stem cell-derived cell spheroids were used to assess the effects of an enamel matrix derivative on cell viability, osteogenic differentiation, and mineralization. : Human gingiva-derived stem cells were used to create spheroids, which were then coupled with unloaded control groups and an enamel matrix derivative at a final concentration of 2.

Data from ameloblast cell lines cultured in 3D using various gel substrates in the presence of ameloblastin.

Data Brief

June 2022

Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology, Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, United States.

This article contains data related to the research article in this issue titled ameloblastin promotes polarization of ameloblast cell lines in a 3D cell culture system (Visakan et al., 2022). In the process of amelogenesis, the organic matrix components are pivotal to the establishment of ameloblast-matrix adhesion.

In this chapter, the results from a relatively recently performed systematic appraisal of the literature on the long-term outcome of regenerative periodontal treatment in intrabony defects are presented. Periodontal regenerative procedures in intrabony defects yield significantly better clinical outcomes compared with conventional surgery and result in high rates of tooth retention on a medium- to long-term basis. Combination approaches seem, in general, more efficacious compared with monotherapy.
