We establish that Microstructured Optical Fibers (MOFs) have a fundamental mode cutoff, marking the transition between modal confinement and non-confinement, and give insight into the nature of this transition through two asymptotic models that provide a mapping to conventional fibers. A small parameter space region where neither of these asymptotic models holds exists for the fundamental mode but not for the second mode; we show that designs exploiting unique MOF characteristics tend to concentrate in this preferred region.

Axions, hypothetical elementary particles that remain undetectable in nature, can arise as quasiparticles in three-dimensional crystals known as axion insulators. Previous implementations of axion insulators have largely been limited to two-dimensional systems, leaving their topological properties in three dimensions unexplored in experiment. Here, we realize an axion insulator in a three-dimensional photonic crystal and probe its topological properties.

In this study, we aim to investigate the neural correlates of ARHL and cognitive impairments based on the changes in white matter (WM) microstructures in a population of non-demented adults.

In flow-through reactors, the photodegradation rate can be improved by enhancing contact and increasing the photocatalyst loading. Both can be attained with a higher surface-to-volume ratio. While previous studies focused on thin membranes (30 - 130 µm) with small pore sizes of 20 - 650 nm, this work employed poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) supports, of which pore sizes are in the order of 10 µm, while the porosities and thicknesses are variable (22.

In this review, we summarize the findings of several pre-clinical studies in the canine BEST1 disease model. To this end, client-owned and purpose bred dogs that were compound heterozygotes or homozygotes, respectively, for two or one of 3 different mutations in BEST1 were evaluated by ophthalmic examination, cSLO/sdOCT imaging, and retinal immunohistochemistry to characterize the clinical and microanatomic features of the disease. Subsequently AAV-mediated gene therapy was done to transfer the BEST1 transgene to the RPE under control of a hVMD2 promoter.

Since the rings of the angular contact ball bearings (ACBBs) are typical highly sensitive quenching thin-walled structure, the microstructure and properties variation of the rings during the heat treatment process are often difficult to be controlled precisely, and then the service life of the bearings is reduced. Therefore, in this study, the combination of the numerical simulation and experimental was carried out during the quenching and tempering process of ACBBs (7008C), the phase transformation of the inner and outer ring during the heat treatment process were explored, and the law of the microstructure evolution and the mechanical properties variation were revealed. Firstly, based on the multi-field coupling theory of temperature, microstructure and stress-strain field, the numerical simulation model of the heat treatment process of the bearing rings was established.
