Follicular thyroid cancer rarely manifests itself as a distant metastatic lesion. We report a case of a 61-year-old woman presented with a solid mass located in the left temporo-occipital region. The 3D computed tomography showed a large solid mass with high vascularity, skull erosion and supra-infratentorial epidural mass effect. After magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) a suspect diagnosis of meningioma was made. The patient underwent surgery where a soft mass with transverse sinus invasion was encountered, the tumor was successfully resected employing microsurgical techniques. Histological examination revealed a thyroid follicular neoplasm with positive staining for follicular carcinoma in immunohistochemical analysis. Postoperatively levels of thyroid hormones were normal. Treatment was planned for the thyroid gland, but the patient did not consent. The present case emphasizes that although they are uncommon, dural metastasis can be mistaken for meningiomas. The definitive diagnosis of a meningioma should be established only after the histopathological analysis. Thyroid follicular carcinoma should be included in the differential diagnosis in cases of extrinsic tumoral lesions.

Distinctive role of mutations in distant metastatic thyroid cancer.

Chin J Cancer Res

December 2024

Department of Nuclear Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100730, China.

Objective: This study investigated the clinical significance of mutations in patients with distant metastatic follicular cell-derived thyroid cancer (FDTC).

Methods: This study included 310 Chinese patients with distant metastatic FDTC. We analyzed the interactions between mutations and other gene alterations and compared the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with pathogenic (P) or likely pathogenic (LP) mutations (n=9), other gene alterations (n=253), and no gene alterations (n=37).

Background: The increase of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) rate among children who were exposed to post-Chernobyl 131-I release was reported only four years after the accident, first in Belarus where the heaviest fallout happened. The evolution of the occurrence of thyroid carcinoma based on the age-period-cohort analysis and the effects of age, period, and birth cohort on time trends aimed to reveal if post-Chernobyl follicular cells irradiation still has been impacting on incidence rate of papillary thyroid carcinoma nowadays.

Methods: The Belarusian Cancer Registry was used to identify patients with PTC diagnosed during the years 1980-2019.

Background: Maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) was associated with increased risk of congenital hypothyroidism in preterm infants, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Objective: To investigate the possible mechanisms by which intrauterine exposure to HDP affects thyroid hormone synthesis in preterm infant rats.

Methods: preterm infant rats were obtained by Caesarean section delivery from the L-NAME group and Control groups which was induced by L-NAME and saline, respectively.

The significance of ALKBH5 in erasing mRNA methylation in mRNA biogenesis, decay, and translation control has emerged as a prominent research focus. Additionally, ALKBH5 is associated with the development of numerous human cancers. However, it remains unclear whether ALKBH5 regulates the growth and metastasis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).

A weight of evidence review on the mode of action, adversity, and the human relevance of xylene's observed thyroid effects in rats.

Xylene substances have wide industrial and consumer uses and are currently undergoing dossier and substance evaluation under Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) for further toxicological testing including consideration of an additional neurotoxicological testing cohort to an extended one-generation reproduction toxicity (EOGRT) study. New repeated dose study data on xylenes identify the thyroid as a potential target tissue, and therefore a weight of evidence review is provided to investigate whether or not xylene-mediated changes on the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis are secondary to liver enzymatic induction and are of a magnitude that is relevant for neurological human health concerns. Multiple published studies confirm xylene-mediated increases in liver weight, hepatocellular hypertrophy, and liver enzymatic induction the oral or inhalation routes, including an increase in uridine 5'-diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase (UDP-GT) activity, the key step in thyroid hormone metabolism in rodents.
