Plants accumulate silicon to protect them from biotic and abiotic stresses. Especially in rice (Oryza sativa), a typical Si-accumulator, tremendous Si accumulation is indispensable for healthy growth and productivity. Here, we report a shoot-expressed signaling protein, Shoot-Silicon-Signal (SSS), an exceptional homolog of the flowering hormone "florigen" differentiated in Poaceae.

Poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm)-based smart hydrogels are widely employed in emerging applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering, because their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is close to physiological conditions. However, the dense chain collapse during the thermo-responsive phase transition restricts water diffusion, resulting in limited volumetric change. Here, a pure PNIPAm hydrogel that achieves a large-scale volume transition by incorporating PNIPAm microgels, is presented.

Variable sleep patterns are a risk factor for disease, but the reasons some people express greater within-individual variability of sleep characteristics remains poorly understood. In our study, we leverage BSETS, a novel mobile EEG-based dataset in which 1901 nights in total were recorded from 267 extensively phenotyped participants to identify factors related to demographics, mental health, personality, chronotype and sleep characteristics which predict variability in sleep, including detailed sleep macrostructure metrics. Young age, late chronotype, and napping emerged as robust correlates of increased sleep variability.

: This study was conducted to develop information and communication technology (ICT)-based oral functional rehabilitation exercise (OFRE) program content to effectively improve the oral function of the elderly people. : After selecting evidence-based effective OFRE items through systematic review, the final items were constructed through the validity evaluation of detailed items through an expert Delphi survey. The items were composed in a simple content form that can be performed directly and applied to ICT-based mobile applications.

Ischemic fasciitis (IF) is a rare pseudosarcomatous lesion usually occurring in physically debilitated or immobilized, elderly patients. The current case presents a 76-year-old mobile man with IF on his back. The 33-mm subcutaneous lesion, focally involving the latissimus dorsi muscle, had been slowly increasing in size for 2 months and was clinically suggested to be a soft-tissue sarcoma.
