Due to increasing oil prices and climate change concerns, biofuels have become more important as potential alternative energy sources. It is an open question which kind of biofuels with which yield potentials, characteristic properties and environmental consequences should give the largest contributions. Microalgae offer novel aquatic biomass systems with higher fuel yield potential and lower water demand than terrestrial biomass. They allow the direct generation of desired end products like biooil, hydrogen, or of materials to be processed afterwards (like starch, biomass). Research and development activities at present include fundamentals of algae strain improvement, reactor design and process integration, with auxiliary power requirements and specific reactor cost being addressed as most critical issues.

Understanding the causes of past atmospheric methane (CH) variability is important for characterizing the relationship between CH, global climate and terrestrial biogeochemical cycling. Ice core records of atmospheric CH contain rapid variations linked to abrupt climate changes of the last glacial period known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events and Heinrich events (HE). The drivers of these CH variations remain unknown but can be constrained with ice core measurements of the stable isotopic composition of atmospheric CH, which is sensitive to the strength of different isotopically distinguishable emission categories (microbial, pyrogenic and geologic).

Although terrestrial organic matter is known to sustain food chains, its impact on zooplankton communities in lakes within urbanized areas remains unclear. This study analyzed a comprehensive, decade-long dataset (1998-2007) that included COD, BOD, and monthly zooplankton records from Lake Taihu to assess the effects of anthropogenic organic matter. Significant spatial variations in COD and BOD were observed across different areas of Lake Taihu (p < 0.

Environmental risk assessments of very hydrophobic organic compounds (VHOCs) in soils are often difficult because multiple processes (e.g., sorption, volatilization, biodegradation) can complicate the interpretation of results.

Trait-based approaches have been increasingly used to relate plants to soil microbial communities. Using the recently described root economics space as an approach to explain the structure of soil-borne fungal communities, our study in a grassland diversity experiment reveals distinct root trait strategies at the plant community level. In addition to significant effects of plant species richness, we show that the collaboration and conservation gradient are strong drivers of the composition of the different guilds of soil fungi.

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition is unequally distributed across space and time, with inputs to terrestrial ecosystems impacted by industry regulations and variations in human activity. Soil carbon (C) content normally controls the fraction of mineralized N that is nitrified (ƒ), affecting N bioavailability for plants and microbes. However, it is unknown whether N deposition has modified the relationships among soil C, net N mineralization, and net nitrification.
