Multilocus Sequence Typing and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Isolated from Foods Surveyed in Kosovo.

Microorganisms

November 2024

Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology, University of Pretoria, Private Bag X20, Hatfield, Pretoria 0028, South Africa.

In the absence of data on the reporting of resistance to antibiotics, we sought to determine which clonal complexes (CCs)/sequence types (STs) circulate in the food chain in Kosovo and to determine their antibiogram profiles to a panel of 18 antibiotics. From a total of 114 isolates, 21 different typical STs were identified by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Each isolate derived from the food categories was subjected to tests to verify its susceptibility to the selected antibiotics according to the designed Sensititre GPN3F panel.

The Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) and the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC) have developed together Clinical Practice Guidelines (GPC) on the management of people affected by tuberculosis (TB) resistant to drugs with activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These clinical practice guidelines include the latest updates of the SEPAR regulations for the diagnosis and treatment of drug-resistant TB from 2017 and 2020 as the starting point. The methodology included asking relevant clinical questions based on PICO methodology, a literature search focusing on each question, and a systematic and comprehensive evaluation of the evidence, with a summary of this evidence for each question.

An a (AEF) is a rare but life-threatening condition where an abnormal connection forms between the aorta and the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly the duodenum. It can be primary (arising spontaneously due to an aortic aneurysm or infection) or secondary (complicating prior vascular surgery). Immediate recognition and surgical intervention are critical to manage severe gastrointestinal bleeding and prevent fatal outcomes.

Antimicrobial stewardship in the Federal Bureau of Prisons: Combining prospective audit and feedback with formulary changes to reduce inappropriate fluoroquinolone use.

Am J Health Syst Pharm

December 2024

College of Pharmacy, Roseman University of Health Sciences, Henderson, NV, and Reserve Commissioned Corps, United States Public Health Service, Washington, DC, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • * Antimicrobial stewardship programs have shown benefits mainly in hospitals, but there's less evidence for their effectiveness in other settings, such as prisons.
  • * A study at the Federal Bureau of Prisons revealed that implementing targeted audits and formulary restrictions led to a significant 46.4% reduction in fluoroquinolone prescriptions, demonstrating that these strategies can effectively improve antibiotic use outside traditional healthcare environments.

This comparative study aimed at qualifying a broth microdilution (BMD) assay for phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (pDST) of complex (MTBC) strains for implementation in a routine DST workflow. The assay was developed based on the EUCAST (European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing) reference protocol for determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 14 anti-tuberculous drugs (isoniazid [INH], rifampicin [RIF], ethambutol [EMB], amikacin [AMI], moxifloxacin [MFX], levofloxacin [LFX], bedaquiline [BDQ], clofazimine [CFZ], delamanid [DLM], pretomanid [PA], para-aminosalicylic acid [PAS], linezolid [LZD], ethionamide [ETH], and cycloserine [CS]). Forty MTBC strains with various drug resistance profiles were tested to determine the agreement between MIC results and genotypic drug susceptibility testing (gDST) results derived from whole-genome sequencing (WGS).
