[Congenital absence of the patella: two cases reported].

Mali Med

Service de Radiologie Générale, CHNU de FANN, Dakar, Senegal.

Published: July 2009

Objectives: To remind a rare disease, To emphasize the importance of patellar agenesis because it's a calling sign, To insist on the necessity to know child bony growth.

Materials And Methods: We reported observations of two negro-african children's, one female and one male, who were both 7-years-old. They were referred for troubles of the walk, knee pains for the male, and for the female frequent falls and hypotonia. We have noted previous history of second degree familial consanguinity and paternal grandfather's ungueal anomalies for the female.

Results: For the female, examination showed ligamentary hyperlaxity, anterior flattening and lateral dimple of the knee, so varied skeletal defects. Skeletal radiographies displayed absence of the patella, "console like" aspect of the superior tibial metaphysis. At the male, examination is normal. Standard radiographies showed semilunar opacities and tomodensitometry showed presence of a tissular formation who looks like the patella. Aplasia of the patellar apparatus is evocated for the female, even though for the male, the diagnosis of hypoplasia seems more probable.

Conclusion: Absence of patella is rare. It can be transient and patellar nucleus appears lately. It can be permanent and in this case, it is isolated whether associated with other osseous malformations. Interest of such observations is in its rarity and its functional impact related to the biomechanical importance of the patella.

Background: Hemophilic arthritis (HA) is associated with significant changes in the morphology of mature knee joints due to abnormal growth plate development. Previous studies have established marked distinctions between the femur and tibia of subjects with Haemophilia and those with osteoarthritis (OA). This study explored the morphological characteristics of the patella and patellofemoral joint in subjects with Haemophilia.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

November 2024

Center for Sports Medicine, Southwest Hospital, Third Military Medical University, No. 30 Gaotanyan Street, Shapingba District, Chongqing, 400036, China.

Methods: The patient, a 23 years old Tibetan Buddhist monk, sustained a left knee joint injury at the age of 12 due to a car accident, leading to subsequent knee arthrodesis at 18 years old as a result of recurrent severe infections.

Patellar tendinopathy is a highly prevalent clinical diagnosis supported by ultrasound changes. Numerous interventions are targeted at improving both symptoms and structure of dysfunctional tendons, however little is known of the diagnostic value in a changing ultrasound profile whilst patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) determine recovery. The aim is to assess if changes in ultrasound measures are congruent with changes in Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment - Patella (VISA-P) scores, thereby supporting the use of ultrasound to assess patellar tendinopathy during symptom improvement.

Patellar groove replacement in patellar maltracking with patellofemoral cartilage erosion in bulldogs.

Can Vet J

November 2024

Clinique vétérinaire SeineVet, 26, rue de la République, 76520 Boos, France.

Article Synopsis
  • This case series focuses on three French bulldogs diagnosed with patellar maltracking, a condition where the patella does not move properly, without actual luxation (dislocation).
  • All dogs demonstrated similar symptoms, including intermittent lameness in one hind leg and significant joint issues between the patella and trochlea's medial ridge.
  • Surgical intervention through patellar groove replacement was successfully performed, resulting in excellent outcomes and high owner satisfaction, suggesting this procedure may be an effective first option for treating patellar maltracking.
