NANCEY ROSENSWEIG is a midwife, childbirth educator, and doula working in New York City. She had a career as a professional modern dancer, teacher, and bodywork therapist for many years before deciding to become a midwife. After performing full-scope midwifery for 10 years, she currently teaches childbirth education at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital and the Ryan-Nena Community Health Center, where she also provides well-woman gynecology.

After her first-time experience as a patient in a hospital, a midwife and childbirth educator reflects on the vulnerability and dependence of women who undergo operative birth. Continuous support for these women during the early postpartum period is imperative. Childbirth educators are encouraged to advocate for these women's needs and to teach them how to advocate for themselves.
