Published: June 2009

The aim of this study was to study clinical and radiological aspects of caseous pneumonia in Burkina Faso where we have higher prevalence of tuberculosis/HIV. 3 years of retrospective study, from 1st January to December 31-1999, had been carried out in the "Centre Hospitalier National Yalgado Ouédraogo de Ouagadougou". Among 106 of patients studied, 26 caseous pneumonia were observed (24.5%) of whom 9 patients were holders of HIV. Often observe on late because of the non specificity of signs, 9 cases of pneumonia upon 26 were excaved (2 holders of HIV and 7 non holders of HIV). The lesion have predominated on upper right lob (19 cases upon 26). The antituberculosis treatment was effective in the major cases but with the sequella (excavations, fibrosis) in patients with excaved lesions or treated in late. Considering the gravity of the disease and its sequella which can be avoid, the presence of fever, slimming even at absence of bacteriologic prouf in debilited patient must evoke caseous pneumonia diagnosis and allowed to begin specific treatment.

Wolf Veterinary Services, PO Box 422, Rushford, MN 55971, USA.

Ovine progressive pneumonia and caprine arthritis encephalitis together are referred to as small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs). Along with caseous lymphadenitis (CL), SRLV are 2 of the so-called "iceberg diseases" of sheep and goats. In the case of SRLV, healthy tissue can be replaced with unproductive lymphoid tissue causing loss of milk, poor growth in lambs, swollen and painful joints, and shortened productive lives of infected animals.

First Report of Caseous Lymphadenitis by and Pulmonary Verminosis in a Roe Deer ( Linnaeus, 1758) in Italy.

Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale Della Lombardia e dell'Emilia Romagna (IZSLER), 47122 Forlì, Italy.

Caseous lymphadenitis is a chronic debilitating disease typical of small ruminants, but it is also noted in several other domestic and wild species. In this report, we present the first documented case in Italy of pseudotuberculosis in a roe deer (, Linnaeus 1758) found dead in the mountains of Forlì-Cesena province, Emilia Romagna region. The carcass underwent necropsy according to standard protocols, revealing generalized lymphadenopathy and severe apostematous pneumonia with multifocal and encapsulated abscesses.

Considerations in caseous calcification of the mitral annulus: a case report.

Eur Heart J Case Rep

November 2022

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905, USA.

Background: Caseous calcification of the mitral annulus is an extremely rare variant of mitral annulus calcification occurring in <1% of cases. The degeneration of caseous masses could act as a source of embolic strokes and a nidus for infective endocarditis (IE).

Case Summary: A man in his sixties presented with transient left arm weakness.

Pathogenic infection characteristics and risk factors for bovine respiratory disease complex based on the detection of lung pathogens in dead cattle in Northeast China.

January 2023

Branch of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Qiqihar 161000, China.

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) involves multiple pathogens, shows diverse lung lesions, and is a major concern in calves. Pathogens from 160 lung samples of dead cattle from 81 cattle farms in Northeast China from 2016 to 2021 were collected to characterize the molecular epidemiology and risk factors of BRDC and to assess the major pathogens involved in bovine suppurative or caseous necrotizing pneumonia. The BRDC was diagnosed by autopsy, pathogen isolation, PCR, or reverse transcription-PCR detection, and gene sequencing.
