Heart valve allografts (usually referred to as 'homografts') have been used in cardiac surgery for over 45 years when they were amongst the first valves ever used. Today they remain an important part of valve replacement and reconstructive surgery, particularly in the field of congenital heart disease. There are currently seven tissue banks on the UK and Eire that procure, prepare and store these homografts for surgical implantation, currently providing around 700 grafts per year. This article reviews the history and applications of homografts and compares their performance and outcomes with current prosthetic alternatives. It also describes the processes of valve procurement and storage and describes their clinical applications, hopefully providing tissue bankers with the surgeon's insight into what is required. Homograft degeneration and the natural history of these tissues is discussed, together with future expectations and developments in homograft valve technology.

Purpose: To establish a national consensus on contraindications for corneal donation for transplantation in Switzerland.
Methods: Swisstransplant (SWT), the Swiss national foundation coordinating tissue and organ donations, convened a working group consisting of six national corneal surgeons and eye bankers and donation experts to create a contraindication list for corneal donation. The group reviewed available national and international guidelines and recommendations, while adhering to Swiss law and transplant regulations.

Adoptive cell therapy with autologous, ex vivo-expanded, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) is being investigated for treatment of solid tumors and has shown robust responses in clinical trials. Based on the encouraging efficacy, tolerable safety profile, and advancements in a central manufacturing process, lifileucel is now the first US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved TIL cell therapy product. To this end, treatment management and delivery practice guidance is needed to ensure successful integration of this modality into clinical care.

Objectives: Corneal blindness is the third most frequent cause of blindness globally. Damage to the corneal endothelium is a leading indication for corneal transplantation, which is typically performed by lamellar endothelial keratoplasty. There are two conventional surgical techniques: Ultra-Thin Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) and Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK).

National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), Tissue and Eye Services, Research and Development, Liverpool, UK.
Introduction: NHS Blood and Transplant Tissue and Eye Services (TES) is a human multi-tissue, tissue bank supplying tissue for transplant to surgeons throughout the UK. In addition, TES provides a service to scientists, clinicians and tissue bankers by providing a range of non-clinical tissue for research, training and education purposes. A large proportion of the non-clinical tissues supplied is ocular tissue ranging from whole eyes, to corneas, conjunctiva, lens and posterior segments remaining after the cornea is excised.

The high-prevalence blood group antigen, Sd, had been puzzling blood bankers and transfusionists for at least a decade when it was reported in 1967. The characteristic mix of agglutinates and free red blood cells (RBCs), caused by anti-Sd, is seen with the RBCs from 90 percent of individuals of European descent. However, only 2-4 percent of individuals are truly Sd(a-) and may produce anti-Sd.
