Carvacrol is an important component of essential oils and recently has attracted much attention as a result of its biological properties, such as a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of carvacrol in liquid and vapour phase on preformed biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis by determining biofilm biomass and cultivable cell numbers, and by using epifluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. Carvacrol was able to reduce biofilm biomass and cell viability more effectively when used with liquid contact rather than with vapour phase. The efficacy of treatment with carvacrol vapour was found to be dependent on exposure time. The predominance of red fluorescence using a LIVE/DEAD BacLight Viability kit (Molecular Probes) and the partially destroyed biofilm architecture as determined by microscopy in treated samples provided evidence for the efficacy of carvacrol. The findings of this investigation suggest a potential application for carvacrol in the inactivation of staphylococcal biofilms.

An extensive thermochemical study of γ-undecanolactone and δ-undecanolactone has been developed using two complementary calorimetric techniques. The combustion energy of each compound was determined by static-bomb combustion calorimetry, and the corresponding enthalpy of vaporization was determined by high-temperature Calvet microcalorimetry, in which both properties of each compound are reported at = 298.15 K.

To investigate the influence of alkali metal compounds in different forms on the sintering mineralization process of iron ore, the basic sintering characteristics of iron ore with alkali metal contents ranging from 0 to 4% were measured using the micro-sintering method, and the influence mechanism was analyzed using thermodynamic analysis and first-principles calculations. The results showed that (1) the addition of KCl/NaCl increased the lowest assimilation temperature (LAT) and the index of liquid-phase fluidity (ILF), while that of KCO/NaCO decreased the LAT but increased the ILF of iron ore. (2) The pores formed by the volatilization of KCl/NaCl suppressed the diffusion of Fe and Ca, which inhibited the formation of silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA).

Laser-plasma acceleration of protons offers a compact, ultra-fast alternative to conventional acceleration techniques, and is being widely pursued for potential applications in medicine, industry and fundamental science. Creating a stable, collimated beam of protons at high repetition rates presents a key challenge. Here, we demonstrate the generation of multi-MeV proton beams from a fast-replenishing ambient-temperature liquid sheet.

The toxicity of electronic cigarette (EC) aerosol is influenced not only by the type of e-liquid but also by various operational parameters of the device used to vaporize it. In this study, we utilized a flask and heating mantle system, instead of a conventional EC device, to systematically evaluate the effects of EC device operational parameters, including vaporization temperature, airflow rate, and the materials of coils and wicks, on the generated mass of EC aerosol and the production of toxic carbonyl compounds. The results demonstrated that these parameters significantly impact aerosol mass and toxicant composition.
