The results of treatment of 219 children with "primary peritonitis" are analysed. Most patients (73.5%) were under 7 years of age. The simple form of primary peritonitis was encountered in 158 (72.1%) and the toxic form in 61 (27.9%) patients. Significant disorders of humoral (B-system) and cellular (T-system) immunity as well as combined incompetence of the neutrophil intra-leukocytic microbicidal system were revealed. In 72% of girls a relation was detected between the occurrence of primary peritonitis and the condition of maturation of the genitalia. All the children were treated by operation and recovered.

Background: Fetal midgut volvulus is a rare disease, with a high risk of potentially life-threatening fetal complications.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze the imaging findings of fetal midgut volvulus diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and explore its value in non-invasive prenatal diagnosis.

Methods: A retrospective collection of data from 156 fetuses suspected of intestinal obstruction by ultrasound examination in our hospital was conducted.

Pneumoperitoneum, or free air in the peritoneal cavity, typically indicates visceral organ perforation requiring urgent surgical intervention. In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, however, it can occur without prior surgery or trauma, often due to technical errors, and may mimic peritonitis, risking misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment. We report a case of a 73-year-old male PD patient presenting with fever, abdominal pain, and bowel ileus, initially raising concerns for organ perforation due to pneumoperitoneum.

Candida lusitaniae is one of the fungal species which causes serious health illnesses including peritonitis, vaginitis and fungemia, among others. Several antifungal drugs have been designed to tackle its infections but their efficacy is still questionable due to their associated side effects. Hence, there is a need to design those drugs which possess comparatively higher degree of therapeutic potential.

Dialysate and plasma meropenem concentrations in continuous intraperitoneal regimen during peritoneal-dialysis-related peritonitis.

PLoS One

January 2025

Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Background: A single dose of intraperitoneal (IP) meropenem is recommended for peritoneal-dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis stemming from extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing organisms. However, data on IP meropenem is limited.

Methods: This prospective, descriptive study was conducted to examine plasma and dialysate meropenem levels during continuous IP meropenem administration in five patients with PD-related peritonitis.

Peritonitis caused by poses a severe threat to patients with end-stage renal failure. Treating multidrug-resistant infections requires the use of antibiotics with diverse mechanisms of action. Caseinolytic protease P (ClpP) is a promising antibacterial target; however, selective activation of (ClpP) over human ClpP (ClpP) remains challenging.
