With regard for the role of bacterial and viral toxins and proteases in the pathogenesis of septic forms of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis, the use of enteral detoxication in the pediatric practice has been substantiated. The authors within 1988-1989, in 35 newborns with septic forms of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis used for detoxication the "Enterosgel" preparation. Control of the state of patients was accomplished by means of bacteriologic, biochemical and immunologic methods. A high detoxicative and antiinflammatory activity of the preparation and its harmlessness for the newborns have been proved.

Background: This video article describes the use of bone-anchored prostheses for patients with transtibial amputations, most often resulting from trauma, infection, or dysvascular disease. Large studies have shown that about half of all patients with a socket-suspended artificial limb experience limited mobility and limited prosthesis use because of socket-related problems. These problems occur at the socket-residual limb interface as a result of a painful and unstable connection, leading to an asymmetrical gait and subsequent pelvic and back pain.

Background: Many patients with a lower limb socket-suspended prothesis experience socket-related problems, such as pain, chronic skin conditions, and mechanical problems, and as a result, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is often negatively affected. A bone-anchored prosthesis can overcome these problems and improve HRQoL, but these prostheses have potential downsides as well. A valid and reliable tool to assess potential candidates for surgery concerning a favorable risk-benefit ratio between potential complications related to bone-anchored prostheses and improvements in HRQoL is not available yet.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the predictive value of cell population data (CPD) parameters in comparison with procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) for an early diagnosis of sepsis in intensive care unit (ICU). The effect of renal function on CPD, PCT and CRP, in septic and non-septic patients was also investigated.
