The classical linear theory of elasticity has been largely used for the ultrasonic characterization of bone. However, linear elasticity cannot adequately describe the mechanical behavior of materials with microstructure in which the stress state has to be defined in a non-local manner. In this study, the simplest form of gradient theory (Mindlin Form-II) is used to theoretically determine the velocity dispersion curves of guided modes propagating in isotropic bone-mimicking plates. Two additional terms are included in the constitutive equations representing the characteristic length in bone: (a) the gradient coefficient g, introduced in the strain energy, and (b) the micro-inertia term h, in the kinetic energy. The plate was assumed free of stresses and of double stresses. Two cases were studied for the characteristic length: h=10(-4) m and h=10(-5) m. For each case, three subcases for g were assumed, namely, g>h, g

Purpose: To improve the current method for MRI turbulence quantification which is the intravoxel phase dispersion (IVPD) method. Turbulence is commonly characterized by the Reynolds stress tensor (RST) which describes the velocity covariance matrix. A major source for systematic errors in MRI is the sequence's sensitivity to the variance of the derivatives of velocity, such as the acceleration variance, which can lead to a substantial measurement bias.

Microwave surface and Lamb waves in a multilayered piezoelectric "Al-IDT/(AlSc)N/(001)[110] diamond" structure designed as a SAW resonator were studied using both the experimental and modeling methods. In this structure, it is possible to generate Rayleigh, surface horizontal (SH) and Lamb waves simultaneously. The successful excitation of Lamb waves at operating frequencies up to 20 GHz has been obtained.

The mechanical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of high fundamental and practical relevance. A particularly intriguing technique for determining anisotropic elastic tensors is Brillouin scattering, which so far has rarely been used for highly complex materials like MOFs. In the present contribution, we apply this technique to study a newly synthesized MOF-type material, referred to as GUT2.

A signal-processing algorithm for the detailed determination of delamination in multilayer structures is proposed in this work. The algorithm is based on calculating the phase velocity of the Lamb wave A mode and estimating this velocity dispersion. Both simulation and experimental studies were conducted to validate the proposed technique.

In microfluidic chips, glass free-form microchannels have obvious advantages in thermochemical stability and biocompatibility compared to polymer-based channels, but they face challenges in processing morphology and quality. Hence, picosecond laser etching with galvanometer scanning is proposed to machine spiral microfluidic channels on a glass substrate. The objective is to disperse and sort microparticles from a glass microchip that is difficult to cut.
