Background And Objective: Coughing events are eruptive sources of virus-laden droplets/droplet nuclei. These increase the risk of infection in susceptible individuals during airborne transmission. The oral cavity functions as an exit route for exhaled droplets.

Liver Transplant Outcome in Chanarin-Dorfman Syndrome: A Rare Lipid Storage Disease.

Exp Clin Transplant

December 2024

>From the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Faculty of Medicine, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran.

Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome is a multisystem inherited metabolic disorder characterized by congenital ichthyosis and lipid droplet accumulation in various organs, including the liver, muscles, and skin. The accumulation of lipids in the liver can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. Here, we present a 17-year-old girl who underwent a deceased donor liver transplant to treat uncompensated cirrhosis due to Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome.

The analysis of cell-free tumor DNA (ctDNA) and proteins in the blood of patients with cancer potentiates a new generation of non-invasive diagnostic approaches. However, confident detection of tumor-originating markers is challenging, especially in the context of brain tumors, where these analytes in plasma are extremely scarce. Here, we apply a sensitive single-molecule technology to profile multiple histone modifications on individual nucleosomes from the plasma of patients with diffuse midline glioma (DMG).

Electroactive organisms contribute to metal cycling, pollutant removal, and other redox-driven environmental processes via extracellular electron transfer (EET). Unfortunately, developing genotype-phenotype relationships for electroactive organisms is challenging because EET is necessarily removed from the cell of origin. Microdroplet emulsions, which encapsulate individual cells in aqueous droplets, have been used to study a variety of extracellular phenotypes but have not been applied to investigate EET.

Immune Aging in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Arthritis Rheumatol

January 2025

Department of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, Rochester, MN, 55905, USA.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a life-long autoimmune disease caused by the confluence of genetic and environmental variables that lead to loss of self-tolerance and persistent joint inflammation. RA occurs at the highest incidence in individuals >65 years old, implicating the aging process in disease susceptibility. Transformative approaches in molecular immunology and in functional genomics have paved the way for pathway paradigms underlying the replacement of immune homeostasis with auto-destructive immunity in affected patients, including the process of immune aging.
