Objective: Decreased memory B-cell maintenance during HIV-1 infection has been associated with the viraemia-induced accumulation of activated memory B cells, sensitive to Fas-mediated apoptosis. We aimed at clarifying whether other B-cell subsets might also be affected by an increased Fas expression in HIV-1-infected patients, and we studied the possible contribution of viraemia, lymphopenia or T-cell activation in Fas upregulation on B cells. We analysed whether Fas upregulation might have collaborative effects with the dysregulation of other B-cell modulatory molecules, leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor 1 (LAIR1) and programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), on B-cell homeostasis.

Equine herpesvirus type 1 and 4 (EHV-1 and EHV-4) are important pathogens of horses worldwide. Infection with EHV-4 usually remains restricted to the upper respiratory tract, whereas infection with EHV-1 can generalize after leukocyte-associated viremia. Here we examined whether differences in the immunomodulatory glycoprotein G (gG) between the two viruses determine EHV-1's ability to cause systemic infection.

Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can lead to life-threatening post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). The aim of the present study was to establish EBV monitoring methods to prevent PTLD.
Methods: EBV-DNA load was investigated, using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and anti-EBV antibody titers, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 21 renal transplant patients (seven recipients who were EBV-seronegative, R[-]; 14 who were EBV-seropositive, R[+]) before grafting.

Objective: To identify risk factors associated with development of clinical neurologic signs in horses exposed to equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).
Animals: 36 adult horses.
Procedures: Blood samples collected before and after challenge inoculation with nonneuropathogenic or neuropathogenic EHV-1 were analyzed for leukocyte-associated viremia, serum neutralizing antibody, and EHV-1-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte precursors (CTLPs).
