Published: February 2009

This report describes a case of postanesthetic brachial triceps myonecrosis affecting only the left forelimb of a horse. A fatal unilateral postanesthetic myonecrosis has not been previously reported in the horse. This article describes the factors in the horse's history, the anesthetic protocol, and the treatment that may have led to this condition.

Article Synopsis
  • Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH), which occurs when core body temperature falls below 36°C, is a common complication during shoulder arthroscopy, especially under general anesthesia (GA).
  • A study comparing GA and interscalene brachial plexus block (ISBPB) found a significantly higher incidence of IPH in the GA group (52.5%) compared to the ISBPB group (30.0%).
  • The results suggest that using ISBPB instead of GA may help reduce the risk of IPH, as evidenced by higher post-anesthesia care unit temperatures in the ISBPB group.

Background: Nerve block anesthesia is a common regional anesthesia used for upper limb surgeries because of its ability to target the operative site and provision of impressive postanesthetic pain relief. This randomized, single-blinded study compared the quality of block of the perineural (PN) and perivascular (PV) techniques of axillary brachial plexus block under ultrasound guidance.

Methods: Sixty-six participants were recruited into either PV or PN groups.

Background: Despite the clinical effectiveness of the programmed intermittent bolus (PIB) method for epidural analgesia, evidence for this method in continuous interscalene brachial plexus block (CIBPB) is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the pain relief effect after arthroscopic shoulder surgery according to the administration method by comparing the PIB and continuous infusion methods among the administration methods of local anesthetics.

Methods: Sixty-four patients aged >19 years scheduled for elective arthroscopic shoulder surgery were enrolled and divided into two groups.

A continuous interscalene brachial plexus block (CIBPB) is usually administered before surgery in awake patients. However, the use of CIBPB before surgery could hinder the identification of nerve injuries after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). This study aimed to compare the analgesic effects of preoperatively and postoperatively initiated CIBPBs in patients undergoing TSA.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) is a reliable and objective method for assessing the adequacy of infraclavicular block and to describe the time course of StO2 changes. In this prospective observational study, StO2 was measured in 40 patients planned for elective hand surgery under infraclavicular block. Noninvasive StO2 monitoring was used prior to ultrasound-guided infraclavicular brachial plexus block and during the first 30 min of the blockade.
