Background: We report a case of herpes simplex virus (HSV) epithelial keratitis that developed after a subtenon triamcinolone acetonide (TA) injection.

Method: A 78-year-old woman with a branch retinal vein occlusion and diffuse macular edema in her left eye received a subtenon injection of 20 mg of TA.

Results: Six days after the injection, the patient presented with a foreign body sensation, tearing, redness, and photophobia in the same eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed multiple corneal dendriform ulcers. She was diagnosed with HSV epithelial keratitis and treated with topical acyclovir ointment. The epithelial lesions healed after 1 week of therapy.

Conclusion: HSV epithelial keratitis can be a possible complication of a TA subtenon injection.

Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK), an ocular disease resulted from herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection, leads to the majority of infectious corneal blindness worldwide. The apoptosis of corneal epithelial cells (CECs) resulted from HSV-1 disrupts the epithelial barrier and exacerbates the infection; however, there is no definitive cure for HSK. Jagged1 (JAG1), one of the primary functional ligands for NOTCH receptors, plays a crucial role in regulating apoptosis and autophagy; however, its role in HSK is unclear.

Electronic address:

The resistance of pathogenic bacteria to various clinical antibiotics is the major problem in treating bacterial keratitis. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) has good anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory effects in fungal keratitis, but its effect on bacterial keratitis is unclear. This study aims to investigate DMF's anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.

A 23-year-old woman was referred for low visual acuity in the left eye after a corneal ulcer associated with contact lens use 2 years previously. The patient had a history of contact lens use, reported use of antibiotic eye drops with improvement of infection, and subsequent scarring. There were no comorbidities.

Aim: To validate the diagnostic performance of a custom 96-micro-organism TaqMan PCR card (iCAM) for microbial keratitis (MK) from a single corneal epithelial sample.

Methods: Patients over the age of 18 referred to Cambridge University Hospital with MK were recruited in this single-site prospective cohort study between September 2021 and January 2023. An ocular-specific, customised microarray card (iCAM) was constructed according to primer and probe nucleotide sequences developed in our department to detect bacteria, viruses, and fungi commonly implicated in MK using a single corneal epithelial sample.
