Monascus purpureus MTCC 410-fermented rice (red mould rice) is one of the food supplements to lower blood-lipid levels and monacolins have been proven to be the main active constituents in red mould rice (RMR). In this study, we have assessed the safety of RMR by conducting toxicological studies in albino rats. Acute and sub-chronic toxicity studies were conducted on both sexes of albino rats. Feeding acute doses of RMR at 0.5, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 g/kg body weight to rats did not cause any symptoms of toxicity or mortality. Similarly, dietary feeding of RMR at 2.0%, 4.0%, 8.0% and 12.0% level (w/w) for 14 weeks did not produce any significant changes in food intake or gain in body weight of the experimental rats compared to control rats. There were no significant differences in the relative weight of vital organs, hematological parameters, macroscopic and microscopic changes in vital organs and serum clinical enzyme levels between the experimental and control groups. Moreover, the rats fed with RMR showed a significant reduction in cholesterol and triglyceride levels in both serum and liver. The results showed that toxicity studies with RMR of M. purpureus did not cause any toxic effects in albino rats.

Introduction: Cerebral ischemic strokes cause brain damage, primarily through inflammatory factors. One of the regions most affected by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) is the hippocampus, specifically the CA1 area, which is highly susceptible to ischemia. Previous studies have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory properties of quercetin.

Magnesium (Mg) is a mineral necessary for many biological activities in mammals. Here, we compared the effect of two Mg compounds [Mg picolinate (MgPic) to Mg oxide (MgO)] on Mg bioavailability and intestinal Mg and calcium transporter protein levels. Three groups of 21 male Wistar-Albino rats were randomly allocated and fed a standard diet (control) or a 500 mg/kg Mg-supplemented (MgPic or MgO) diet for 8 weeks.

Background/aim: In an aging model established using male Wistar albino rats via the administration of D-galactose (D-gal), the aim of this study was to examine the effects of chelidonic acid (CA) on cognitive function and the levels of glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TAS), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
Materials And Methods: Thirty-two, three-month-old Wistar albino male rats (n = 8) were divided into four groups, as the control (C) group, CA group (2 mg/kg of CA via oral gavage), D-gal group (150 mg/kg of D-gal, subcutaneously), and D-gal + CA group (150 mg/kg of D-gal and 2 mg/kg of CA). Following overnight fasting, the 10-week trial was concluded with intramuscular injections of anesthetic drugs xylazine (8-10 mg/kg) and ketamine (80-100 mg/kg), and subsequently, the collection of cardiac blood.

Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections but is associated with adverse cardiac effects, including oxidative damage and myocardial inflammation. This study aims to explore the histopathological and biochemical changes, including serum interleukin-10 levels, induced by azithromycin in the hearts of male albino rats and to evaluate the protective role of combined selenium and vitamin E treatment. Forty rats were divided into four groups: a control group, an azithromycin treatment group, selenium and vitamin E treatment group, and a combined treatment group receiving both azithromycin, selenium, and vitamin E.

Breast cancer (BC) is a substantial reason for cancer-related mortality among women across the globe. Anastrozole (ANS) is an effective orally administered hormonal therapy for estrogen+ (ER+) BC treatment. However, several side effects and pharmacokinetic limitations restricted its uses in BC treatment.
