Parotidectomy: the timing of post-operative complications.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

Department of Otolaryngology, Warwick Hospital, Warwick, UK.

Published: January 2010

We evaluated the timing of complications following parotidectomy. We performed a 119-patient retrospective case series analysis over a 12-year period (1994-2006) and investigated timing of post-operative complications. 38% of temporary facial nerve palsies resolved within 1 month, 78% within 3 months and all recorded resolved within 7 months. Tumour recurrence, ranged from 5 months to 9 years post-surgery with a median of 5 years. Salivary fistula formation ranged from 3 to 45 days post-surgery with a median of 11.5 days. The development of Frey's ranged from 20 days to 22 months, median 11 months. This information can better inform clinicians and those patients undergoing parotidectomy.

Aims: Open fractures of the tibia are associated with significant complications, for which attempts have been made to standardise and optimise their management. In the UK, this standard is the British Orthopaedic Association Standards for Trauma (BOAST) guidelines. The Scottish Open Fracture of Tibia (SOFT) Audit is a national review of open tibial shaft fractures across all four Scottish Trauma Networks, which aims to provide a definite review of ortho-plastic care for open tibial shaft fractures in Scotland.

Purpose: Congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy (CHED) impairs the sensitive phase of visual development. We examined results of Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) for CHED regarding the critical period for amblyogenic factors.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 11 eyes of 6 consecutive patients with CHED younger than 8 years treated with DSAEK and a PubMed-based literature search on management and optimal timing of the intervention.

Novel early vertical ridge augmentation technique.

J Dent Sci

January 2025

School of Dentistry, College of Oral Medicine, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan.

Background/purpose: Multiple augmentation protocols are documented in the literature to rebuild the deficient alveolar ridge after tooth extraction; however, achieving adequate vertical augmentation remains the most challenging goal. This study demonstrated a novel surgical technique of early vertical ridge augmentation for post-dental extraction. This technique offers several biological and technical advantages regarding the timing of the procedure and its relative simplicity compared to other complex techniques.

We describe, to our knowledge, the first use in Dubai of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) in a patient who suffered intraoperative cardiac arrest due to presumed cardiac channelopathy. A 40-year-old patient presented for open myomectomy surgery. She had no other medical problems apart from obesity.

Background: Transcatheter valve-in-valve replacement (TMViVR) is an alternative option for patients with bioprosthetic valve failure (BVF) who are at high surgical risk. Although infective endocarditis (IE) after transcatheter mitral valve-in-valve replacement is unusual, it is associated with significantly high mortality.

Case Presentation: An 81-year-old male patient was admitted with intermittent thoracic tightness, chest pain persisting for 3 years, and shortness of breath with nausea for 1 week.
