Gold nanoshells (GNS) are a new class of nanoparticles that can be optically tuned to scatter or absorb light from the near-ultraviolet to near-infrared (NIR) region by varying the core (dielectric silica)/shell (gold) ratio. In addition to spectral tunability, GNS are inert and bioconjugatable, making them potential labels for in vivo imaging and therapy of tumors. We report the use of GNS as exogenous contrast agents for enhanced visualization of tumors using narrow-band imaging (NBI). NBI takes advantage of the strong NIR absorption of GNS to distinguish between blood and nanoshells in the tumor by imaging in narrow wavelength bands in the visible and NIR, respectively. Using tissue-simulating phantoms, we determined the optimum wavelengths to enhance contrast between blood and GNS. We then used the optimum wavelengths for ex vivo imaging of tumors extracted from human colon cancer xenograft bearing mice injected with GNS. Systemically delivered GNS accumulated passively in tumor xenografts by the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Ex vivo NBI of tumor xenografts demonstrated heterogeneous distribution of GNS with a clear distinction from the tumor vasculature. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of using GNS as contrast agents to visualize tumors using NBI.

The polyphenol-starch complex has become a hot research topic since it is evident that this modification method can alter the physicochemical properties of starch as well as improve its nutritional value. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of ginger polyphenol gingerols (GNs) and shogaols (SNs) on the structure of starch with different amylose content (WCS, CS, G56, G80). Textural and rheological results indicated that GNs and SNs had more pronounced inhibitory retrogradation effects for relative low-level amylose starches (WCS and CS) compared to relative high-level amylose starches (G56 and G80).

A dual-mode detection platform utilizing colorimetric and Raman was developed based on the exponential amplification reaction (EXPAR) strategy and a "core-satellite" structure constructed by bimetallic nanozymes to detect chloramphenicol (CAP). Initially, DNA-gated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating cascaded amplification were used to be nanocarriers for the colorimetric and Raman reporter molecules (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl; TMB). Subsequently, assembled DNA served as gatekeepers to create a stimulus-responsive DNA-gated MOF (TMB@DNA/MOF).

Heatable super hydrophobic polyurethane (PU) sponges (S-GNS/CNT/PVA@PU) containing three-dimensional (3D) carbon nano-networks (CNNs) coatings made from two-dimensional (2D) expanded graphite nano-sheets (GNS) bridged by one-dimensional (1D) carbon nano-tubes (CNT) were constructed using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binder, in which light and/or electric energy could be rapidly converted into heat to reduce the viscosity of spilled heavy oils, resulting in greatly increased oil. Their heavy oil recovery rate could reach 792 kg/(m·h) under combined light and Joule heating of 1 sun and 5 V. Surface heat dissipating coefficient Ks, heat dissipating index n, and surface heat absorption capacity Cs were studied relating to sizes and shapes of surface heating fields under varied heating modes.

Although restrictive eligibility criteria contribute to this issue, the role of selection bias related to prognostic risk remains unclear. In this study, we developed TrialTranslator, a framework designed to systematically evaluate the generalizability of RCTs for oncology therapies.

Purpose: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have demonstrated promise in the treatment of various cancers. Single-drug ICI therapy (immuno-oncology [IO] monotherapy) that targets PD-L1 is the standard of care in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with PD-L1 expression ≥50%. We sought to find out if a machine learning (ML) algorithm can perform better as a predictive biomarker than PD-L1 alone.
