We report on the self-assembly and the electrical characterization of bicomponent films consisting of an organic semiconducting small molecule blended with a rigid polymeric scaffold functionalized in the side chains with monomeric units of the same molecule. The molecule and polymer are a perylene-bis(dicarboximide) monomer (M-PDI) and a perylene-bis(dicarboximide)-functionalized poly(isocyanopeptide) (P-PDI), which have been codeposited on SiO(x) and mica substrates from solution. These bicomponent films have been characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), revealing the relationship between architecture and function for various supramolecular nanocrystalline arrangements at a nanometer spatial resolution. Monomer-polymer interactions can be controlled by varying solvent and/or substrate polarity, so that either the monomer packing dictates the polymer morphology or vice versa, leading to a morphology exhibiting M-PDI nanocrystals connected with each other by P-PDI polymer wires. Compared to pure M-PDI or P-PDI films, those bicomponent films that possess polymer interconnections between crystallites of the monomer display a significant improvement in electrical connectivity and a 2 orders of magnitude increase in charge carrier mobility within the film, as measured in thin film transistor (TFT) devices. Of a more fundamental interest, our technique allows the bridging of semiconducting crystals, without the formation of injection barriers at the connection points.

The nanoscale chiral arrangement in a bicomponent organic material system comprising donor and acceptor small molecules is shown to depend on the thickness of a film that is responsive to chiral light in an optoelectronic device. In this bulk heterojunction, a previously unreported chiral bis(diketopyrrolopyrrole) derivative was combined with an achiral non-fullerene acceptor. The optical activity of the chiral compound is dramatically different in the pure material and the composite, showing how the electron acceptor influences the donor's arrangement compared with the pure molecule.

The fabrication of multi-component film with colloidal particles could be inconvenient. A novel "swell-permeate" (SP) strategy was proposed to form homogeneous multi-component films. The SP strategy allows colloidal particles to fit into the polymer network by stretching the polymer chains assisted by water.

Here, biogenic and multifunctional active food coatings and packaging with UV shielding and antimicrobial properties were structured from the aqueous dispersion of an industrial byproduct, suberin, which was stabilized with amphiphilic cellulose nanofibers (CNF). The dual-functioning CNF, synthesized in a deep eutectic solvent, functioned as an efficient suberin dispersant and reinforcing agent in the packaging design. The nanofibrillar percolation network of CNF provided a steric hindrance against the coalescence of the suberin particles.

This study presents a novel method based on the electrochemical co-reduction of two aryldiazonium salts, enabling the synthesis of controlled two-component monolayer thin films on carbon in a single step. By introducing a 12-carbon alkyl chain as a spacer between the aryldiazonium function and the functional group, precise control over film thickness and composition was achieved. The alkyl chain effectively standardizes the reduction potential, enabling the equalization of reactivity and precise stoichiometric control.

Polymer semiconductors with mobilities exceeding 10 cm V s , especially ambipolar and n-type polymer semiconductors, are still rare, although they are of great importance for fabricating polymer field-effect transistors (PFETs) toward commercial high-grade electronics. Herein, two novel donor-acceptor copolymers, PNFFN-DTE and PNFFN-FDTE, are designed and synthesized based on the electron-deficient bisisoindigo (NFFN) and electron-rich dithienylethylenes (DTE or FDTE). The copolymer PNFFN-DTE, containing NFFN and DTE, possesses a partially locked polymeric conjugated backbone, whereas PNFFN-FDTE, containing NFFN and FDTE, has a fully locked one.
