Rarefaction acceleration and kinetic effects in thin-foil expansion into a vacuum.

Published: April 2009

The collisionless expansion into a vacuum of a thin plasma foil adiabatically cooling down is studied with a particular emphasis on the evolution of the electron distribution function. It is shown that during the expansion the bulk of the distribution function evolves towards a top-hat distribution. As a result, while the electrons globally lose energy in favor of the ions, the rarefaction wave accelerates until it reaches the center of the foil. The electron temperature becomes strongly inhomogeneous, with a maximum in the center of the foil, a strong dip in the outer part of the foil, and a constancy of the initial temperature in the far corona.

Single-crystal Au(111), renowned for its chemically inert surface, long-range "herringbone" reconstruction, and high electrical conductivity, has long served as an exemplary template in diverse fields, , crystal epitaxy, electronics, and electrocatalysis. However, commercial Au(111) products are high-priced and limited to centimeter sizes, largely restricting their broad applications. Herein, a low-cost, high-reproducible method is developed to produce 4 in.

Hydroxysilylene (HSi-OH) in the gas phase.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

Ideal Vacuum Products, LLC, 5910 Midway Park Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109, USA.

The hydroxysilylene (HSiOH) molecule has been spectroscopically identified in the gas phase for the first time. This highly reactive species was produced in a twin electric discharge jet using separate precursor streams of 16O2/18O2 and Si2H6/Si2D6, both diluted in high pressure argon. The strongest and most stable laser induced fluorescence (LIF) signals were obtained by applying an electric discharge to each of the precursor streams and then merging the discharge products just prior to expansion into vacuum.

Context: The two-dimensional graphene/MoTe heterostructure holds extensive potential applications in optoelectronic devices, sensors, and catalysts. To expand its optical applications, this study systematically investigates the adsorption stability of metal atoms (Au, Pt, Pd, and Fe) on the graphene/MoTe and their influence on its optoelectronic properties employing first-principles methods. The findings indicate that after the adsorption of Au and Pd, the structure retains its direct bandgap properties, while the adsorption of Pt and Fe exhibits indirect bandgap characteristics.

As an important by-product of pork, pork skin can be processed into meat-based leisure food products to improve its utilization. In this study, microwave vacuum drying (MVD) technology was used to investigate the effects of microwave powers (600, 700, and 800 W) and processing duration on the drying characteristics and quality attributes of pork skin crisps (PSC). Five classical drying models were used to non-linearly fit the experimental data, and the Midilli et al.

Effects of the Quantum Vacuum at a Cosmic Scale and of Dark Energy.

Entropy (Basel)

November 2024

Departamento de Física, Universidad de Cantabria, 39005 Santander, Spain.

The Einstein equation in a semiclassical approximation is applied to a spherical region of the universe, with the stress-energy tensor consisting of the mass density and pressure of the ΛCDM cosmological model plus an additional contribution due to the quantum vacuum. Expanding the equation in powers of Newton constant G, the vacuum contributes to second order. The result is that at least a part of the acceleration in the expansion of the universe may be due to the quantum vacuum fluctuations.
