The expanded level structure of 240Pu available from the present study highlights the role of strong octupole correlations in this nucleus. In addition to a delayed alignment in the yrast band, the observations include the presence of both I(+)-->(I-1)(-) and I(-)-->(I-1)(+)E1 transitions linking states of the yrast and negative-parity bands at high spin and the presence of an additional even-spin, positive-parity band deexciting exclusively to the negative-parity sequence. The observations appear to be consistent with expectations based on the recently proposed concept of octupole phonon condensation.

Three nuclear weapons tests were conducted in the 1950s at the Montebello Islands, Western Australia. The detonations were of different yields and configurations (two tower tests, one ship test), and led to substantial radionuclide contamination within the surrounding terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The region possesses great ecological and recreational significance, particularly within the marine environment.

Trace-level plutonium in the environment often comprises local and global contributions, and is usually anthropogenic in origin. Here, we report estimates of local and global contributions to trace-level plutonium in soil from a former, fast-breeder reactor site. The measured Pu/Pu ratio is anomalously low, as per the reduced Pu yield expected in plutonium bred with fast neutrons.

Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP), Horia Hulubei National Institute for R&D in Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), Reactorului 30, 077125 Bucharest-Măgurele, Romania.

Here we present an investigation of a plutonium-beryllium neutron source available at the Horia Hulubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Romania, to be used for detector characterization during the implementation of the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics project. Using several different techniques and instruments, we have measured the isotopic composition for plutonium to be 75% Pu and 24% Pu, with a minor contribution from other isotopes. Furthermore, we have measured the source activity as of November 20th 2019 to be 2.

A total of 456 nuclear tests were performed from 1949 to 1989 at the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) in Kazakhstan, as part of the nuclear weapon test program of the USSR. To identify if radionuclides such as Cs, Sr, Am, Pu were associated with radioactive particles, soil samples were collected at selected contaminated sites (i.e.

Fractional cumulative yields (FCY) of various light mass fission products in the fast neutron induced fission of Th, U, Pu and Cm have been determined by using the off-line γ-ray spectrometric technique. From present and literature data, width of isobaric charge distribution (σ), the most probable charge (Z) and the experimental charge polarization (∆Ζ) as a function of fragment mass were deduced. The ∆Ζ values from the present work for light mass chains and earlier work for heavy mass chains show oscillating nature due to nuclear structure effect.
