We revisit here the effect of quantum dissipation on the much studied problem of Landau diamagnetism and analyze the results in the light of the third law of thermodynamics. The case of an additional parabolic potential is separately assessed. We find that dissipation arising from strong coupling of the system to its environment qualitatively alters the low-temperature thermodynamic attributes such as the entropy and the specific heat.

Due to the sulfur's atoms' propensity to form molecules and/or polymeric chains of various sizes and configuration, elemental sulfur possesses more allotropes and polymorphs than any other element at ambient conditions. This variability of the starting building blocks is partially responsible for its rich and fascinating phase diagram, with pressure and temperature changing the states of sulfur from insulating molecular rings and chains to semiconducting low- and high-density amorphous configurations to incommensurate superconducting metallic atomic phase. Here, using a fast compression technique, we demonstrate that the rapid pressurisation of liquid sulfur can effectively break the molecular ring structure, forming a glassy polymeric state of pure-chain molecules (Am-S).

Unraveling key ABA pathways, including OsWRKY71-OsABA8ox1 and OsbZIP73-OsNCED5, provides valuable insights for improving cold tolerance in rice breeding for cold-prone regions. Cold stress limits rice (Oryza sativa L.) production in cooler climates.

Background: Recent research has demonstrated that the consumption of high fat diet (HFD) can lead to metabolic dysfunctions and cognitive impairments in both mice models and humans. Given the potential negative effects of HFD, it is crucial to explore non-pharmacological alternatives that can serve as a potential treatment for both metabolic dysfunctions and behavioral effects induced by HFD. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the impact of chronic and intermittent exposure to cold temperature on the metabolic and cognitive changes associated with HFD consumption.

Despite the conventional view of liquid aluminum (l-Al) as a simple metal governed by the free-electron model, it exhibits unique bonding characteristics. This study uncovers a gradual transition from free electron to electride behavior in l-Al at high pressure and temperature, forming a type of two-component liquid where atomic and electride states coexist. The proportion of electride increases with pressure and temperature until reaching saturation, leading to notable changes in the pair-correlation function and coordination number of l-Al at saturation pressure.
