Newborn Syrian hamster dermal fibroblasts in primary culture have high plating efficiency, manifest as homogeneous contact-sensitive monolayer in mass cultures and above all possesses a short life-span of 15-20 days in culture. These cells are quite sensitive to mutagenic carcinogens. The DMBA treatment induced multi-layer and foci formation and growth in soft-agar suggesting that immortal variants can be obtained by treatment with carcinogens.

As near-infrared radiation (NIR), which is a composition of sunlight with an 780-1400 nm wavelength, is associated with skin aging such as wrinkles and slacks, the biological actions of NIR with high dermal penetration remains unclear. In the present study, we found that NIR irradiation (40 J/cm ) at different levels of irradiance (95-190 mW/cm ) using a laboratory device with a xenon flash lamp (780-1700 nm) caused sebaceous gland enlargement concomitantly with skin thickening in the auricle skin of hamsters. The sebaceous gland enlargement resulted from the proliferation of sebocytes due to an increase in the number of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)- and lamin B1-positive cells in vivo.

Fibroblast growth factor 5 (FGF5) is an important molecule required for the transition from anagen to catagen phase of the mammalian hair cycle. We previously reported that Syrian hamsters harboring a 1-bp deletion in the Fgf5 gene exhibit excessive hair growth in males. Herein, we generated Fgf5 mutant mice using genome editing via oviductal nucleic acid delivery (GONAD)/improved GONAD (i-GONAD), an in vivo genome editing system used to target early embryos present in the oviductal lumen, to study gender differences in hair length in mutant mice.

The gold standard for diagnosis of leishmaniasis is the microscopic detection of amastigotes/Leishman Donovan (LD) bodies, but its moderate sensitivity necessitates the development of molecular approaches. This study aimed to quantify in experimental animal models and human leishmaniasis the expression of amastigote-specific virulence genes, and by droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR). Total RNA was isolated from -infected hamsters or murine peritoneal macrophages and lesional biopsies from patients with post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL).

To address the unprecedented global public health crisis due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), we designed and developed a novel antiviral nano-drug, called SNAT (Smart Nano-Enabled Antiviral Therapeutic), comprised of taxoid (Tx)-decorated amino (NH)-functionalized near-atomic size positively charged silver nanoparticles (Tx-[NH-AgNPs]) that are stable for over 3 years. Using a hamster model, we tested the preclinical efficacy of inhaled SNAT on the body weight, virus titer, and histopathology of lungs in SARS-CoV-2-infected hamsters, including biocompatibility in human lung epithelium and dermal fibroblasts using lactase dehydrogenase (LDH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) assays. Our results showed SNAT could effectively reverse the body weight loss, reduce the virus load in oral swabs, and improve lung health in hamsters.

Arnica tincture is a herbal medicinal preparation with anti-inflammatory activity which is used traditionally for the topical treatment of blunt injuries as well as rheumatic muscle and joint complaints. Its main bioactive constituents are sesquiterpene lactones (STLs) of the helenalin and 11α,13-dihydrohelenalin types. Besides the mentioned activity, the tincture and its isolated STLs have antileishmanial activity.
