Fourteen fern, two horsetail (Pteridophyta), three clubmoss (Lycopodiophyta), nine moss and two liverwort (Bryophyta, Marchantiophyta) species were examined for the presence of betaines. Glycinebetaine was detected in some of the fern, clubmoss, moss and liverwort species, but not in either of the two horsetail species examined. However, trigonelline was detected in one (Equisetum telmateia). Thus, betaines have now been found in at least some species in all the major phyla of green plants.

Phyllosphere bacterial community and metabolomic analysis revealed the mechanism of Cd tolerance in the bryophyte (Hedw.) Limpr.

Front Plant Sci

Key Laboratory of Biological Resources and Genetic Engineering of Xinjiang, College of Life Science and Technology, Xinjiang University, Urumqi, China.

Introduction: Phytoremediation is a safe and green technology for the remediation of heavy metal pollution, a global environmental problem. Bryophytes are well known for their special physiological properties, but there is little research on the use of bryophytes for phytoremediation.

Methods: In this indoor experiment, the impacts of 40 days of Cd pollution (1 (T1), 5 (T2), 10 (T3) mg·L) on Cd absorption, growth and physiological characteristics, and phyllosphere bacterial diversity of were explored.

Microbial Biodiversity in Sediment from the Amuyo Ponds: Three Andean Hydrothermal Lagoons in Northern Chile.

Microorganisms

November 2024

Laboratory of Biochemistry, Biomedical Department, Health Sciences Faculty, Centre for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (CeBiB), Universidad de Antofagasta, Antofagasta 1240000, Chile.

The Amuyo Ponds (APs) are a group of three brackish hydrothermal lagoons located at 3700 m above sea level in a pre-Andean setting in the Atacama Desert. Each pond shows a conspicuous green (GP), red (RP), or yellow (YP) coloration, and discharges water rich in arsenic and boron into the Caritaya River (Camarones Basin, northern Chile). Microorganisms are subjected to harsh environmental conditions in these ponds, and the microbial composition and diversity in the Amuyo Ponds' sediments are unknown.

Background: Arsenic (As) metabolism pathways and their coupling to nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) cycling contribute to elemental biogeochemical cycling. However, how whole-microbial communities respond to As stress and which taxa are the predominant As-transforming bacteria or archaea in situ remains unclear. Hence, by constructing and applying ROCker profiles to precisely detect and quantify As oxidation (aioA, arxA) and reduction (arrA, arsC1, arsC2) genes in short-read metagenomic and metatranscriptomic datasets, we investigated the dominant microbial communities involved in arsenite (As(III)) oxidation and arsenate (As(V)) reduction and revealed their potential pathways for coupling As with N and C in situ in rice paddies.

Study on the Differences in Fecal Metabolites and Microbial Diversity of Jiangshan Black-Bone Chickens with Different Earlobe Colors.

Animals (Basel)

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Applied Technology on Green-Eco-Healthy Animal Husbandry of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Laboratory for Animal Health Inspection & Internet Technology, College of Animal Science and Technology & College of Veterinary Medicine of Zhejiang Agriculture and Forestry University, Hangzhou 311300, China.

The differences in earlobe color of Jiangshan black-bone chickens have been reported to be caused by the combined effects of melanin and collagen. In this study, we conducted LC-MS untargeted metabolomics and 16S rDNA diversity sequencing on the cecal contents of two types of earlobes: peacock green (Blue and Green group) and dark reddish-purple (Black group). The metabolomic sequencing identified a total of 747 differential metabolites (DMs), in which the metabolites were primarily enriched in tyrosine and tryptophan metabolism pathways between peacock green and dark reddish-purple earlobes.

Bacterial communities in Asecodes hispinarum (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and its host Brontispa longissima (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), with comparison of Wolbachia dominance.

Key Laboratory of Monitoring and Control of Tropical Agricultural and Forest Invasive Alien Pests of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Environment and Plant Protection Institute, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, Haikou 571101, China.

The endoparasitoid Asecodes hispinarum (Bouček) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) serves as an effective biological control agent against Brontispa longissima (Gestro) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a notorious palm pest. Endosymbionts found in parasitoids and their hosts have attracted significant attention due to their substantial influence on biocontrol efficacy. In this study, we employed 16S rRNA sequencing, polymerase chain reaction, and fluorescence in situ hybridization to assess the symbiotic bacteria composition, diversity, phylogeny, and localization in A.
