Understanding factors influencing community resilience to disturbance is critical for mitigating harm at various scales, including harm from medication to gut microbiota and harm from human activity to global biodiversity, yet there is a lack of data from large-scale controlled experiments. Factors expected to boost resilience include prior exposure to the same disturbance and dispersal from undisturbed patches. Here we set up an in vitro system to test the effect of disturbance pre-exposure and dispersal represented by community mixing.

Public health emergencies are critical to people's lives and health, economic development and social stability. Understanding how to respond correctly to public health emergencies is the focus of societal attention. This paper focuses on the tripartite entities of public health emergencies: local governments, pharmaceutical enterprises and the public.

High-throughput method characterizes hundreds of previously unknown antibiotic resistance mutations.

A fundamental obstacle to tackling the antimicrobial resistance crisis is identifying mutations that lead to resistance in a given genomic background and environment. We present a high-throughput technique - Quantitative Mutational Scan sequencing (QMS-seq) - that enables quantitative comparison of which genes are under antibiotic selection and captures how genetic background influences resistance evolution. We compare four E.

Most m5C modifications in mammalian mRNAs are nonadaptive.

Mol Biol Evol

January 2025

5-methylation (m5C) on mRNA molecules is a prevalent internal posttranscriptional modification in eukaryotes. Although m5C modification has been reported to regulate some biological processes, it is unknown whether most mRNA m5C modifications are functional. To address this question, we analyzed the genome-wide evolutionary characteristics of m5C modifications in protein-coding genes of humans and mice.
