A nonlinear model equation in Rayleigh-Plesset form is developed for volume oscillations of a compliant object buried close to the surface in soil. The equation takes into account the stress-free boundary condition on the surface of the ground. The model is fully nonlinear given exact relations for the elastic potential energy stored in deformation of the object and the soil. Expansions of the potential energies for weak nonlinearity are provided in terms of elastic constants that can be determined experimentally. When the shear modulus is allowed to increase with depth below the surface, the natural frequency predicted by the model first decreases and thereafter increases with burial depth, in agreement with reported observations. Perturbation solutions are derived for the displacements on the surface of the ground at the second harmonic and difference frequency due to the nonlinear response of the object to acoustic excitation.

Objective: This paper aims to enhance exoskeleton compliance during locomotion assistance by reducing misalignment and to improve energy efficiency by overcoming the limitations posed by the bulky structure of powered rigid exoskeletons.
Methods: A novel compliant knee exoskeleton, featuring a parallel elastic self-alignment mechanism, has been developed and structurally optimized. The exoskeleton uses adaptive oscillators to determine the wearer's gait phase and provides real-time assistance to the knee joint.

Time series biomechanical data inform our understanding of normal gait mechanics and pathomechanics. This study examines the utility of different quantitative methods to distinguish vertical ground reaction forces (VGRFs) from experimentally distinct gait strategies. The goals of this study are to compare measures of VGRF data-using the shape factor method and a Fourier series-based analysis-to (1) describe how these methods reflect and distinguish gait patterns and (2) determine which Fourier series coefficients discriminate normal walking, with a relatively stiff-legged gait, from compliant walking, using deep knee flexion and limited vertical oscillation.

Animals traverse vegetation by direct physical interaction using their entire body to push aside and slide along compliant obstacles. Current drones lack this interaction versatility that stems from synergies between body morphology and feedback control modulated by sensing. Taking inspiration from nature, we show that a task-oriented design allows a drone with a minimalistic controller to traverse obstacles with unknown elastic responses.
