Traumatic facial fractures that were once rarely encountered now present with increasing frequency in the elderly population. Included in this group of fractures are those of the atrophic edentulous mandible. As patients age and become edentulous, atrophy of the mandibular alveolar ridges and adjacent basal bone reduces bony surface area, bone density, and blood supply, making the mandible more brittle and increasing the likelihood of mandibular fracture during a traumatic event. Surgical treatment of these fractures has become more predictable and less morbid. However, because these fractures present so infrequently, many surgeons lack the relevant experience in handling them, and thus find the reduction and fixation of such injuries difficult. A number of techniques have been employed to treat this injury. This article reviews the more common modalities and presents updates on accepted surgical treatments.

Vertebral collapse (VC) following osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) often requires aggressive treatment, necessitating an accurate prediction for early intervention. This study aimed to develop a predictive model leveraging deep neural networks to predict VC progression after OVCF using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical data. Among 245 enrolled patients with acute OVCF, data from 200 patients were used for the development dataset, and data from 45 patients were used for the test dataset.

This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the intrinsic properties of RNiP (where R = Sm, Eu) filled skutterudite, employing the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within density functional theory (DFT) simulations using the WIEN2k framework. Structural, phonon stability, mechanical, electronic, magnetic, transport, thermal, and optical properties are thoroughly explored to provide a holistic understanding of these materials. Initially, the structural stability of SmNiP and EuNiP is rigorously evaluated through ground-state energy calculations obtained from structural optimizations, revealing a preference for a stable ferromagnetic phase over competing antiferromagnetic and non-magnetic phases.

The height of the water-conducting fracture zones (WCFZ) is crucial for ensuring safe coal mining beneath aquifers, particularly considering the secondary development of the WCFZ in upper seams due to repeated mining in close distance coal seams. Accurately predicting this height is essential for mine safety, groundwater protection, and optimal coal resource use. This study compiles extensive measured data from various mining areas in China to analyze the coupling relationship between the WCFZ development height and six influencing factors: mining thickness, mining depth, coal seam spacing, hard rock lithology ratio, and the slope length of working face.

The potential for mitigating intestinal inflammation through the gut-bone axis in the treatment of osteoporosis is significant.
