The self-assembly of thiophene-containing dextran and cyclodextrin derivatives on gold surfaces was investigated. Morphological studies (AFM) and the elemental characterization (XPS) of the surfaces show that the carbohydrate derivatives form either aggregates or uniform films depending on the structure and the solvent used. The real coverage of the surface, and hence the amount of unmodified free gold, was examined by a "titration" of the surface with a carboxyl-terminated SAM (11-mercaptoundecanoic acid, MUA) and with Mn-12, a manganese oxocluster. Each carboxyl group reacts with one acetate ligand of the manganese cluster, with each Mn-12 cluster capable of binding multiple MUAs, leading to defined manganese-functionalized surfaces. The weight percentage of manganese and consequently the coverage area of the carboxyl-terminated SAM is examined by XPS.

The accurate assessment of body composition in cirrhosis is challenging as fluid accumulation affects most techniques. The whole-body counter is a state-of-the-art method that measures total body potassium (TBK) unbiased by fluid, from which body cell mass (BCM) is derived. This pilot study in 20 patients with cirrhosis evaluated bedside tools including the liver frailty index (LFI), bioimpedance analysis-based phase angle, calf circumference (CC), and BMI (body mass index)/edema-adjusted CC, and explored their association with TBK and BCM.

Institute of Vascular Biology and Thrombosis Research, Center for Physiology and Pharmacology, Medical University of Vienna, Schwarzspanierstrasse 17, 1090 Vienna, Austria. Electronic address:

A series of eight gold(I) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes [Au(IMes)(HLn)] based on 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) and 7-azaindole derivatives (HLn), where n = 1-8 for HL1 = 5-flouro-7-azaindole, HL2 = 5-bromo-7-azaindole, HL3 = 3-chloro-7-azaindole, HL4 = 3-iodo-7-azaindole, HL5 = 5-bromo-3-chloro-7-azaindole, HL6 = 5-bromo-3-iodo-7-azaindole, HL7 = 4-chloro-2-methyl-7-azaindole and HL8 = 7-azaindole, was prepared, characterised and studied for their in vitro anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects. The complexes showed significant cytotoxicity on human ovarian cancer cell lines (A2780, IC ≈ 8-19 μM and A2780R, IC ≈ 8-19 μM) and lowered toxicity in normal HaCat and MRC-5 cells. Cellular effects of the selected complexes 1 and 7 were evaluated in A2780 cells using flow cytometry.

Synaptic protein expression in bipolar disorder patient-derived neurons implicates PSD-95 as a marker of lithium response.

Neuropharmacology

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry and Center for Circadian Biology, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA; VA San Diego Healthcare System, San Diego, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness characterized by recurrent episodes of depression and mania. Lithium is the gold standard pharmacotherapy for BD, but outcomes are variable, and the relevant therapeutic mechanisms underlying successful treatment response remain uncertain. To identify synaptic markers of BD and lithium response, we measured the effects of lithium on induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons from BD patients and controls.

Background: When papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is accompanied by Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), it is often challenging for preoperative ultrasound to distinguish between central lymph node enlargement caused by PTC metastasis and inflammatory reaction due to HT. However, central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) is closely associated with the risk of PTC recurrence after surgery. In this study, we developed a model to predict in patients with PTC combined with HT, based on conventional ultrasound characteristics and shear wave elastography (SWE) quantitative parameters of the primary lesion.

Sulfur species and gold transport in arc magmatic fluids.

Nat Geosci

December 2024

Department of Earth Sciences, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland.

The sulfur species present in magmatic fluids affect the global redox cycle, the Earth's climate and the formation of some of the largest and most economic ore deposits of critical metals. However, the speciation of sulfur under conditions that are relevant for upper crustal magma reservoirs is unclear. Here we combine a prototype pressure vessel apparatus and Raman spectroscopy to determine sulfur speciation in arc magmatic fluid analogues in situ over a range of geologically relevant pressure-temperature-redox conditions.
