The community of Tenganan in eastern Bali, Indonesia, has requested technical assistance from Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB) to improve the quantity and quality of water delivered through their water supply system. This is a unique development project in which the Tenganan people have identified their own needs and developed their own conceptual solution to the problem. For the first time, EWB is undertaking the design phase for the water system by an off-shore design team and project assistance team (PAT) based in Australia. This allows EWB to draw on resources and experience of EWB members and their employing companies in Australia. It also enables young engineers to develop skills and experience in development work without having to leave the country. However, the innovative approach also presented significant challenges to the project members, particularly in establishing appropriate design criteria and the co-ordination of simultaneous activities across Australia. This paper describes the approach taken by EWB and makes a preliminary assessment of the benefits and limitations inherent in this approach. The overall aim of the project is to produce a successful "bottom-up" development action that will deliver a sustainable solution to the Tenganan community.

Aberrant c-AMP signalling in richter syndrome revealed by single-cell transcriptome and 3D chromatin analysis.

Richter syndrome (RS), characterized by aggressive lymphoma arising from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), presents a poor response to treatment and grim prognosis. To elucidate RS mechanisms, paired samples from a patient with DLBCL-RS were subjected to single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) sequencing. Over 10,000 cells were profiled via scRNA-seq, revealing the comprehensive B cell transformation in RS.

CFD analysis of heat transfer enhancement in impinging jet array by varying number of jets and spacing.

Thermal and Energetic Systems Studies Laboratory (LESTE), LR99ES31, College of Engineering, University of Monastir, 5000, Monastir, Tunisia.

Using the RANS approach with the standard k-ω turbulence model, this study offers a novel investigation into the dynamic and thermal properties of turbulent impinging jet arrays. Our study examines the combined effect of the number of jets (N) and the jet-jet spacing (S) on flow mechanisms and heat transfer performance, which is unique compared to previous research that frequently focuses on the individual effects of parameters. Through the investigation of the turbulent kinetic energy, friction coefficient, velocity contours, streamlines, pressure contours, and local and mean Nusselt numbers, we provide important information about how these parameters impact flow dynamics.

Making sense of vertebrate senses from a neural crest and cranial placode evo-devo perspective.

Trends Neurosci

January 2025

Division of Biology and Biological Engineering, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA. Electronic address:

The evolution of vertebrates from protochordate ancestors marked the beginning of the gradual transition to predatory lifestyles. Enabled by the acquisition of multipotent neural crest and cranial placode cell populations, vertebrates developed an elaborate peripheral nervous system, equipped with paired sense organs, which aided in adaptive behaviors and ultimately, successful colonization of diverse environmental niches. Underpinning the enduring success of vertebrates is the highly adaptable nature of the peripheral nervous system, which is enabled by the exceptional malleability of the neural crest and placode developmental programs.

Computational nuclear oncology for precision radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) is a new frontier for theranostic treatment personalization. A key strategy relies on the possibility to incorporate clinical, biomarker, image-based, and dosimetric information in theranostic digital twins (TDTs) of patients to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. The TDT framework enables treatment optimization by real-time monitoring of the real-world system, simulation of different treatment scenarios, and prediction of resulting treatment outcomes, as well as facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing among health care professionals adopting a harmonized TDT.

Pushing the envelope - How the genome interacts with the nuclear envelope in health and disease.

The nuclear envelope has for long been considered more than just the physical border between the nucleoplasm and the cytoplasm, emerging as a crucial player in genome organisation and regulation within the 3D nucleus. Consequently, its study has become a valuable topic in the research of cancer, ageing and several other diseases where chromatin organisation is compromised. In this chapter, we will delve into its several sub-elements, such as the nuclear lamina, nuclear pore complexes and nuclear envelope proteins, and their diverse roles in nuclear function and maintenance.
