Objective: To investigate changes and establish reference values for coagulation variables during normal pregnancy and after delivery in Chinese women.
Methods: A prospective, sequential, longitudinal study with strict inclusion and exclusion criteria was performed with 232 Chinese women.
Results: Prothrombin time, international normalized ratio, activated partial thromboplastin time, and activated partial thromboplastin time ratio were shorter, and platelet count decreased gradually during pregnancy, with no change in mean platelet volume; conversely, plasma concentration of both fibrinogen and fibrin/fibrinogen degradation product increased. All these variables were normalized during the postpartum. Reference values by gestational week were established for platelet count, fibrinogen concentration, and fibrin/fibrinogen degradation product concentration.
Conclusions: These reference values may be used in the health assessment of pregnant women with a similar socioeconomic and ethnic background.

Unidirectional moisture-conducting fabrics were prepared by electrospraying polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) onto three green fabric substrates, namely cotton, hemp, and modal. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of coating thickness, coating material, and substrate material on the moisture conductivity of the fabrics. The electrospraying technique was effective in forming uniform and strongly adhered PVDF and PVC coatings on the fabric substrates, and the coating thickness and material type had a significant effect on the fabric's moisture conductivity.

A narrative review of the main guidelines and recommendations published from 2011 up to date about the status of vitamin D deficiency has been carried out. The objective of this review is to discuss the origin of the controversy about the status of this entity, as well as the evolution of the methodological aspects and clinical situations that require vitamin D screening. The results obtained indicate that the criteria defining vitamin D status, according to two studies published in 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations and the Endocrine Society (ES) guidelines, regardless the affected population.

This study aimed to measure the whole blood viscosity (WBV) in racehorses using a new viscometer and establish reference values, as well as to investigate the correlation between the WBV and the haematological parameters and serum chemistry. WBV measurements were conducted on 51 Thoroughbred horses using a novel U-shaped scanning capillary-tube viscometer. The reference values for the WBV were determined at various shear rates ranging from 1 s to 1 000 s.

Objective: Hand washing is considered an important public health intervention to reduce the burden of communicable diseases such as gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections. Washbasins in public restrooms are often only equipped with cold water and it can be observed that people only rinse their hands briefly after using the toilet instead of washing them properly with soap. As there are no recommendations on the optimal water temperature for efficacy, we measured the efficacy of simple hand rinsing with cold (4°C) and warm (40°C) water for 10 and 20 seconds compared to the European Norm EN 1499 reference hand wash.
