The reaction of trimethylamine (TMA) vapor with a polydisperse distribution of ammonium nitrate particles (20-500 nm dia.) was studied in a flow tube reactor with particle analysis by laser desorption (1064 nm) 70 eV electron ionization (EI) in an ion trap time-of-flight (IT-TOF) aerosol mass spectrometer. When the TMA vapor concentration was very high, essentially complete exchange of TMA for ammonia in the particles was achieved. When the TMA vapor concentration was lower ( approximately 500 ppb for a reaction time of 23 s), partial exchange was observed, and the initial reactive uptake coefficient was estimated to be on the order of 2 x 10(-3) at 20% RH. This value suggests that measurable exchange is possible in the atmosphere when particles are exposed to an amine concentration on the order of 1 ppb for a few hours. The effects of particle size, water content, and amine molecular structure on uptake remain to be elucidated.

Phosphorous-containing materials are used in a wide array of fields, from energy conversion and storage to heterogeneous catalysis and biomaterials. Among these materials, organic-inorganic metal phosphonate solids and thin films present an interesting option, due to their remarkable thermal and chemical stability. Yet, the synthesis of phosphonate hybrids by vapour phase thin film deposition techniques remains largely unexplored.

Influence of Relative Humidity on the Mechanical Properties of Palm Leaf Manuscripts: Short-Term Effects and Long-Term Aging.

Molecules

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Archaeomaterials and Conservation, Institute of Cultural Heritage and History of Science & Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Ministry of Education, Beijing 100083, China.

Palm leaf manuscripts are a valuable part of world cultural heritage. Studying the mechanical properties of palm leaf manuscripts and their changes due to environmental influences is of great significance for understanding the material characteristics, aging mechanisms, and preventive conservation of these manuscripts. This study used dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) and a thermomechanical analyzer (TMA) to investigate the changes to the mechanical properties of palm leaf manuscripts in response to different relative humidity conditions and different time periods.

An automatic multi-precursor flow-type atomic layer deposition system.

Rev Sci Instrum

Finishing Manufacturing Science (Sigma-2), Los Alamos National Laboratory, P.O. Box 1663, Los Alamos, New Mexico 87545, USA.

Designs for two automated atomic layer deposition (ALD) flow reactors are presented, and their capabilities for coating additively manufactured (AM) metal prints are described. One instrument allows the coating of several AM parts in batches, while the other is useful for single part experiments. To demonstrate reactor capabilities, alumina (Al2O3) was deposited onto AM 316L stainless steel by dosing with water (H2O) vapor and trimethylaluminum (TMA) and purging with nitrogen gas (N2).

Vapor phase infiltration (VPI) facilitates the incorporation of inorganic components into organic polymers, emerging as an effective technique for fabricating organic-inorganic hybrid materials. However, the complexity of diffusion behavior during the VPI process presents challenges in studying diffusion kinetics, particularly for highly reactive precursor-polymer systems such as trimethylaluminum (TMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). In this study, we investigate the VPI process of TMA in PEO using in situ quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM), which enables measurement of diffusion behavior and kinetics with high precision due to its high temporal resolution.

Gas sensors are used for monitoring hazardous gases and vapors. With the emergence of S-terminated MXene synthesis, herein, we explore the sensing ability of TiCS toward N-containing gases, including NH, NO, NO, trimethylamine (TMA), and nicotine (NT), using first-principles calculations and a statistical thermodynamic model. We find that TiCS exhibits high selectivity to TMA, NO, and NT with moderate adsorption energies of -0.
