Published: April 2009

Direct conversion of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, which is one of the biomass-derived chemicals, to 1,5-pentanediol was realized by chemoselective hydrogenolysis catalyzed by Rh/SiO(2) modified with ReO(x) species, and this reaction route gave higher yield than the conventional multi-step method.

Chemoselective Hydrogenolysis of Urethanes to Formamides and Alcohols in the Presence of More Electrophilic Carbonyl Compounds.

The development of methods for the chemical recycling of polyurethanes is recognized as an urgent issue. Herein, we report the Ir-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of the urethane C-O bond to produce formamides and alcohols, where both formamides and ester and amide functionalities are tolerated. The chemoselectivity observed is counterintuitive to the generally accepted electrophilicity order of carbonyl compounds.

The cleavage of C-O bonds is one of the most promising strategies for lignin-to-chemicals conversion, which has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, current catalytic system capable of selectively breaking C-O bonds in lignin often requires a precious metal catalyst and/or harsh conditions such as high-pressure H and elevated temperatures. Herein, we report a novel protocol of paired electrolysis to effectively cleave the C-O-4 bond of lignin model compounds and real lignin at room temperature and ambient pressure.

Chemoselectivity change in catalytic hydrogenolysis enabling urea-reduction to formamide/amine over more reactive carbonyl compounds.

Nat Commun

The selective transformation of a less reactive carbonyl moiety in the presence of more reactive ones can realize straightforward and environmentally benign chemical processes. However, such a transformation is highly challenging because the reactivity of carbonyl compounds, one of the most important functionalities in organic chemistry, depends on the substituents on the carbon atom. Herein, we report an Ir catalyst for the selective hydrogenolysis of urea derivatives, which are the least reactive carbonyl compounds, affording formamides and amines.

Tritiation of aryl thianthrenium salts with a molecular palladium catalyst.

Tritium labelling is a critical tool for investigating the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of drugs, autoradiography, receptor binding and receptor occupancy studies. Tritium gas is the preferred source of tritium for the preparation of labelled molecules because it is available in high isotopic purity. The introduction of tritium labels from tritium gas is commonly achieved by heterogeneous transition-metal-catalysed tritiation of aryl (pseudo)halides.

Unraveling the reaction mechanism of selective C9 monomeric phenols formation from lignin using Pd-AlO-activated biochar catalyst.

Department of Chemical Engineering and National Center for Combustion Research and Development, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai 600036, India. Electronic address:

The conversion of biomass-derived lignin to valuable monomeric phenols at high selectivity is of paramount importance for sustainable biorefineries. In this study, a novel Pd-AlO supported on activated biochar catalyst is developed for lignin hydrogenolysis. The catalyst characterization revealed that the (111) planes of both of Pd and AlO were exposed to the surface.
