Atmospheric emissions of mercury in the US are being reduced, but worldwide mercury emissions remain high. Mercury is also being removed from many consumer items. Changes over time in mercury concentrations in fish remain important to resource managers and the general public. There is hope that mercury concentrations in fish will decline, and the number of fish consumption advisories due to mercury will decrease. We compared mercury concentrations in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from a group of Adirondack lakes with data collected 12-17 years earlier and found variable responses among lakes. We observed an average decline of 14% in yellow perch mercury concentrations over the past 15 years.

Cocoa-growing areas in Ghana have experienced a rise in mining activities affecting cocoa cultivation and increased concentrations of potentially toxic metals in the soil, which can accumulate in cocoa beans. This study evaluated potential toxic metal contamination in cocoa beans and soils from cocoa farms in mining and non-mining areas in Ghana. We used X-ray fluorescence and an ICP-MS to determine metal concentrations, and a Zeeman mercury analyzer to determine mercury.

With an obsolete livestock sector, Gabon relies on its huge hydrographic network rich in fish to supply its populations with animal proteins. This study aimed to conduct metal analyses in four fish species () frequently consumed by human populations in the Moyen-Ogooué and Haut-Ogooué Provinces of Gabon and infer the potential human health risks for those populations who rely on these freshwater produces as a source of proteins. Fish were sampled from Ezanga, Oguemoué, Onangué, Nguenè (Moyen-Ogooué) and Grand Poubara (Haut-Ogooué) Lakes during the high flow period (HF) and low flow period (LF) from 2021 to 2022, and analysed for seven heavy metals (HMs) using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) techniques.

Sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and anaerobic digestion (AD) with municipal wastewater sludge containing heavy metals may provide favorable conditions for the biogeochemical transformation of mercury (Hg) by methanogens and methanotrophs. However, it remains largely unclear what Hg-methylators functioned and what role Methanosarcina played in these processes. Here, we performed sulfate-driven AOM following AD with Hg-containing wastewater sludge and investigated the role of microbes, especially Methanosarcina, in the biogeochemical transformation of Hg based on 16S rRNA amplicon and metatranscriptomic sequencing.

The developing foetus is particularly sensitive to neurotoxic metals. The placenta is considered an ideal tissue for biomonitoring prenatal cumulative metal exposure. Based on the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort study (MABC) in China, this study investigated associations of non-essential metals and essential metals in placenta, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn), with cognitive development in children among 1586 mother-child pairs.

Contaminant monitoring programs use wild bird eggs, but determining whether measured concentrations elicit adverse effects relies on extrapolation from toxicity studies with avian model species. Here, we directly evaluated the relationships between whole embryo contaminant concentrations and mRNA expression in liver tissue of the double-crested cormorant (). Eggs collected from three North American sites (one from Lake Erie and two from the Salish Sea) were artificially incubated until pipping.
