Published: March 2009

The phonoarticulatory diadochokinesis test has been recommended to evaluate neurological disorders. It is a speech task that consists of the ability to repeat at high speed a segment of speech. The purpose of this research is to analyze the diadochokinesia rate of adults from two distinct age groups. 23 young adults and 23 elderly people, both sexes participated in this study. Each participant produced the /pa/, /ta/, /ka/ syllables, the vowel /a/ and the /pataka/ sequence, as fast and as long as they could with habitual pitch and loudness. The speech samples were analyzed by using the voice and speech analysis software Visi-Pitch III/Sona-Speech, KayElemetrics. Both groups presented with reduced diadochokinesia rate as the speech production became more complex. The young adults group presented with higher diadochokinesia rate in adults in all speech tasks while the elderly adults group had a worse intensity control.

Multifeature quantitative motor assessment of upper limb ataxia including drawing and reaching.

Ann Clin Transl Neurol

May 2024

Division Translational Genomics of Neurodegenerative Diseases, Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research and Center of Neurology, University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany.

Objective: Voluntary upper limb movements are an ecologically important yet insufficiently explored digital-motor outcome domain for trials in degenerative ataxia. We extended and validated the trial-ready quantitative motor assessment battery "Q-Motor" for upper limb movements with clinician-reported, patient-focused, and performance outcomes of ataxia.

Methods: Exploratory single-center cross-sectional assessment in 94 subjects (46 cross-genotype ataxia patients; 48 matched controls), comprising five tasks measured by force transducer and/or position field: Finger Tapping, diadochokinesia, grip-lift, and-as novel implementations-Spiral Drawing, and Target Reaching.

Background: Diadochokinetic (DDK) rate tasks are extensively used in the evaluation of speech disorders; however, it is unclear how the different types of speech stimuli affect DDK rate performance.

Aims: To investigate the effect of age, gender and type of stimuli (non-words versus real words) on the DDK rates in individuals across the lifespan and to provide normative data for Greek. Also to examine the discrimination ability of the speech DDK stimuli administered (non-words and real words) based on a dual DDK assessment protocol using a polytomous item response theory (IRT) model.

Purpose: The objective of this work was to verify the efficacy of a treatment based on myofunctional therapy techniques which aimed to improve the tongue strength, precision, and speed of a ten-year-old girl with nemaline myopathy (NM) and the repercussions of this therapy on her speech intelligibility. NM is a rare congenital muscle disorder that causes extreme muscle weakness, especially in the face and neck, as well as severe dysarthria and dysphagia, although this does not affect the nervous system or cognitive development.

Method: This was a single-subject experimental study which used an interrupted pre- and post-treatment time-series design, and which applied autoregressive integrated moving-average predictive models and Holt exponential smoothing.

Objective: To prospectively evaluate the effect of PSA- and VIM DBS on speech in ET patients.

Methods: Leads were implanted bilaterally with contacts placed in both VIM and PSA. Thirteen patients were analyzed pre- and postoperatively.
