Multidetector CT of thoracic aortic aneurysms.

Published: May 2009

Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) can be broadly divided into true aneurysms and false aneurysms (pseudoaneurysms). True aneurysms contain all three layers of the aortic wall (intima, media, and adventitia), whereas false aneurysms have fewer than three layers and are contained by the adventitia or periadventitial tissues. Multidetector computed tomographic (CT) angiography allows the comprehensive evaluation of TAAs in terms of morphologic features and extent, presence of thrombus, relationship to adjacent structures and branches, and signs of impending or acute rupture, and is routinely used in this setting. Knowledge of the causes, significance, imaging appearances, and potential complications of both common and uncommon aortic aneurysms, as well as of the normal postoperative appearance of the thoracic aorta, is essential for prompt and accurate diagnosis. Prediction of the need for surgery in patients with unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm based on SOFA score.

PLoS One

January 2025

General Surgery, Cancer Center, Department of Vascular Surgery, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, Affiliated People's Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Objective: This retrospective study aimed to explore the association and clinical value of sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score on the predictors of adverse events in patients with unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).

Methods: A total of 322 patients from Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database were enrolled. Logistic regression was conducted to explore the association between SOFA and primary outcome (need for surgery, NFS).

Limited data exist on cancer screening in carceral facilities. This study evaluates the feasibility and outcomes of a population-based lung cancer screening initiative in a carceral setting. This is a retrospective review of a lung cancer screening event at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections.

Background: Current guidelines recommend preserving at least one of the bilateral pelvic flows in patients with aortoiliac aneurysms. The sandwich parallel graft, using commercially available devices, provides a viable option for patients who fall outside the instructions for use of iliac branch devices. However, gutter endoleak remains a significant challenge.

An a (AEF) is a rare but life-threatening condition where an abnormal connection forms between the aorta and the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly the duodenum. It can be primary (arising spontaneously due to an aortic aneurysm or infection) or secondary (complicating prior vascular surgery). Immediate recognition and surgical intervention are critical to manage severe gastrointestinal bleeding and prevent fatal outcomes.

Unraveling the causal impact of smoking and its DNA methylation signatures on cardiovascular disease: Mendelian randomization and colocalization analysis.

Clin Epigenetics

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, 138 Tongzipo Road, Yuelu District, Changsha, 410013, Hunan, China.

Background: To explore the mechanisms linking smoking to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) from an epigenetic perspective.

Methods: Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis was performed to assess the causal effects of smoking behavior and DNA methylation levels at smoking-related CpG sites on nine CVDs, including aortic aneurysm, atrial fibrillation, coronary atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, heart failure, intracerebral hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, subarachnoid hemorrhage. Colocalization analysis was used to further identify key smoking-related CpG sites from the MR causal estimates.
