Background: Focal ventricular tachycardia (VT) in acute myocardial ischemia is closely related to triggered activity (TA), which may be blocked by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Objective: This study analyzed effects of acutely administered ROS scavenger-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO) on VT in vivo and TA in vitro.

Methods: Forty-three alpha chloralose anesthetized dogs with coronary artery occlusion were studied. Three-dimensional activation mapping helped to locate the origin of focal or reentrant VT. TEMPO (30 mg/kg intravenously) or vehicle was given. Endocardium excised from the site of origin of VT was studied using standard microelectrode techniques and measures of ROS.

Results: Reentry and focal VT induction were both highly reproducible. TEMPO blocked focal VT in 6 of 11 dogs (P <.05), but 9 of 9 dogs with reentrant VT continued to have VT re-induced after TEMPO. TEMPO did not alter effective refractory period (168 +/- 3 to 171 +/- 3 ms), mean blood pressure (88 +/- 3 to 81 +/- 3 mm Hg), and size of ischemia (42% +/- 3% vs 40% +/- 4%). In vitro, TEMPO (10(-3) M, n = 14) produced no change in action potentials. Nevertheless, TA was reversibly attenuated from 5.3 +/- 1.1 to 0.4 +/- 0.4 complexes with TEMPO (n = 15, P <.05). Lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence and dihydroethidium staining showed increased ROS in ischemic endocardium; TEMPO dramatically reduced ROS in ischemic sites.

Conclusion: TEMPO, a scavenger of ROS, prevented triggered activity associated with focal VT during myocardial ischemia in areas of increased ROS. Antioxidant therapy may play an important role in blockade of focal VT under the conditions of myocardial ischemia.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) has been classified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the condition being regarded as the most significant parasitic disease affecting the nervous system. Hence, the aim of this study was to conduct a review of previously published case reports on this topic in order to ascertain whether there is an increasing trend of NCC worldwide and evaluate the cases that have been presented. After a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection using the keywords "neurocysticercosis" and "case reports", studies were selected by applying inclusion criteria.

Background: Hypertension has shown a trend of prevalence at younger ages, and the non-dipping pattern is associated with target organ damage in hypertension. However, few studies have yet investigated the clinical characteristics and risk factors of non-dipper status in essential hypertension children. This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics and possible indicators associated with non-dipper status in children with essential hypertension.

Although the long-term outcomes of the surgical grafts are well defined and reported, the data regarding the mid-and long-term results of the balloon-expandable percutaneous valves in the native right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) is limited. We retrospectively evaluated 42 patients who underwent PPVI (Sapien® XT valve) to native RVOT due to severe pulmonary regurgitation (PR) and/or moderate to severe pulmonary stenosis (PS) between August 2015 and November 2020. The median patient age at the time of PPVI was 13.

To explore techniques, advantages and disadvantages of 3D Slicer reconstruction and 3D printing localization technology combined with transcranial neuroendoscopy in ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery. Retrospective analysis of clinical data of patients with hydrocephalus treated by ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery using 3D Slicer reconstruction and 3D printing positioning technology combined with transcranial neuroendoscopy in our hospital from October 2021 to March 2023. A total of 33 patients with complete data were collected, including 19 males and 14 females, aged 10-81 years.

Background: Children with end-stage heart failure listed for cardiac transplantation may require mechanical ventilation and/or circulatory support whilst awaiting transplantation. A subgroup of these patients is unable to wean off mechanical ventilator support and undergo tracheostomy to enhance quality of life and allow de-escalation of intensive care. There is limited evidence of the use of tracheostomy associated with pediatric cardiac transplantation.
