Fermentation of a Penicillium sp. isolated from a surface-sterilized thallus segment of the brown alga Xiphophora gladiata, collected from Macrocarpa Point, Otago, New Zealand, in half-strength potato dextrose broth led to the isolation and characterization of three alkaloids: the known N-hydroxy-2-pyridone, PF1140 (1), and two new 2-pyridones, 2 and 3.

Unlabelled: Tetramic acid-containing natural products are attracting significantly increasing attention from biologists and chemists due to their intriguing structures and biological activities. In the present study, two new tetramic acid alkaloids tolypyridone I () and tolypyridone J (), together with five known ones (-), were isolated from cultures of a marine fungus FB06 isolate obtained from a marine sediment in Beaufort sea of North Alaska. Their structures were elucidated using 1D, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS.

Xiangya School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Central South University, Changsha, P. R. China.

One new cyclopeptide, cyclo-(-Trp--Phe--Phe) (), one new 2-pyridone derivative, fusarone A (), and one new natural indole derivative, ethyl 3-indoleacetate (), along with six known compounds were isolated from the endophytic fungus T2-10. The planar structures of three new compounds were identified by spectral methods including 1D and 2D NMR techniques, and the absolute configuration of compound was elucidated by Marfey-MS method. In addition, all compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic and antibacterial activities .
