Background: Coronary calcium score (CCS) is established as an index for the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The aim of this prospective study was to assess changes in CCS in patients 1 year after kidney transplantation (KTx).
Method: A total of 221 consecutive renal transplant recipients were enrolled in our prospective study (140 males/81 females). CCS was analyzed by spiral multidetector CT at baseline and 1 year after KTx. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in the lumbar spine (L-BMD) and femur (F-BMD).
Results: The mean CCS was 539 +/- 1,033 at baseline. 33% of the patients had a CCS of 0, and 33% of patients had a CCS of >401. A negative correlation was found between F-BMD and CCS, but no correlation was found between L-BMD and CCS. Using CCS, a positive correlation was found between total cholesterol and the age of patients, but no correlation of CCS was found with other biochemical markers of bone and lipid metabolism. One year after transplantation, the mean CCS was 703 +/- 1,253; in 75% of patients the CCS was the same and 25% had a higher CCS.
Conclusion: A high risk of CHD was found in 33% of renal graft recipients. No improvement in CCS was found 1 year after KTx.

COVID-19-related persistent olfactory dysfunction (OD) presents remarkable interindividual differences, and little is known about the host genetic factors that are involved in its etiopathogenesis. The goal of this study was to explore the genetic factors underpinning COVID-19-related OD through the analysis of Whole Genome Sequencing data of 153 affected subjects, focusing on genes involved in antiviral response regulation. An innovative approach was developed, namely the assessment of the association between a "gene score", defined as the ratio of the number of homozygous alternative variants within the gene to its length, and participants' olfactory function.

Friction-stir-welded dissimilar AA2024/AA7075 joints have an apparent influence on grain and texture development at the weld interface due to differences in physical and chemical properties between the two aluminum alloys. In this work, the effect of tool shoulder profile on grain structure and texture evolution in the center interface zone (CIZ) and bottom interface zone (BIZ) of dissimilar AA2024/AA7075 joints were quantitatively studied by electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). The results indicate that abundant fine and coarse equiaxial grains are produced in the CIZ and BIZ of the joints produced with a concentric circle shoulder (CCS) and three-helix shoulder (THS), and the average grain size of the BIZ is lower than that of the CIZ for the same CCS or THS joint.
