The anaerobic biodegradability of a mix of municipal primary sludge (PS), thickened waste activated sludge (TWAS) and fat, oil, and grease (FOG) was assessed using semi-continuous feed, laboratory-scale anaerobic digesters operated at mesophilic (35 degrees C) and thermophilic (52 degrees C) temperature. Addition of a large FOG fraction (48% of the total VS load) to a PS+TWAS mix, resulted in 2.95 times larger methane yield, 152 vs. 449 mL methane @ STP/g VS added at 35 degrees C and 2.6 times larger methane yield, 197 vs. 512 mL methane @ STP/g VS added at 52 degrees C. The high FOG organic load fraction was not inhibitory to the process. The results of this study demonstrate the benefit of sludge and FOG codigestion.

Applying microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) is a biological approach to enhance the growth of high amounts of electroactive biofilm for extracellular electron transfer. The electroactive biofilm degrades the organics by oxidizing them at the anode and producing electrical energy. Addition of waste-activated sludge (WAS) with fat grease oil (FOG) produces an optimal reactor environment for microbial growth to enhance the exchange of electrons between cells via microbial electrolysis.

The deposition of fats, oil, and grease (FOG) in sewers reduces conveyance capacity and leads to sanitary sewer overflows. The major contributing factor lies in the indiscriminate disposal of used cooking oil (UCO) via kitchen sinks. While prior investigations have mostly highlighted the significance of Ca from concrete biocorrosion, the influence of common metal ions (e.

Triclosan (TCS) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic widely used in various personal care products. Research has found that exposure to TCS can cause toxic effects on organisms including neurotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, disorders of lipid metabolism, and abnormal vascular development, and the corresponding toxic mechanisms are gradually delving into the level of abnormal expression of miRNA regulating gene expression. Although the downstream mechanism of TCS targeting miRNA abnormal expression to induce toxicity is gradually improving, its upstream mechanism is still in a fog.

The accumulation of fat, oil and grease (FOG) deposits in sanitary sewer systems is a significant cause of sewer overflows, mainly due to their tendency to adhere to pipe walls. The aim of this study is to (i) develop laboratory-prepared FOG deposits using a mixture of iron (Fe) and aluminium (Al) metal ions, fatty acids, saccharides and cooked oils, in addition to various sanitary waste materials such as paper towels, wipes and pads and (ii) examine the characteristics of these FOG deposits. The goals of this study were to (i) gain a deeper understanding of the impact of sanitary waste on the formation of FOG deposits and (ii) discuss the detailed physiochemical properties of these FOG deposits.
