The full vibrational spectra of the gamma, delta, and epsilon crystalline phases of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS), i.e., phases presenting the s(2/1)2 helical conformation, have been experimentally determined and compared with that calculated at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory for an infinite helix. The assignment of the different modes was highly facilitated and validated by the experimental evaluation of the direction of the transition moment vector of most IR peaks, which was made possible for the first time by measurements on sPS films with different uniplanar orientations of the crystalline phase. The normal vibration analysis of most representative modes of the periodic model allowed for a general description of each one to be obtained, which was further confirmed by the direct inspection of mode animations.

This work examines the functional dependence of the efficiency of separation of oil-water emulsions on surfactant adsorption abilities of high surface area polymer gels. The work also develops an understanding of the factors and steps that are involved in emulsion separation processes using polymer gels. The work considers four polymer gels offering different surface energy values, namely, syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS), polyimide (PI), polyurea (PUA), and silica.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are an emerging class of contaminants that are environmentally persistent, bioaccumulative, and noxious to human health. Among these, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) molecules are widely found in ground and surface water sources. A novel high surface area, meso- and macroporous syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) wet gel is used in this work as the adsorbent of PFOA molecules from water at environmentally relevant PFOA concentrations (≤1 μg/L) and cleanse water to below the U.

Polyesters, a highly promising class of circular polymers for achieving a closed-loop sustainable plastic economy, inherently exhibit material stability defects, especially in thermal and hydrolytic instability. Here, we introduce a class of polyesters, P(4-BL) (R=Ph, Bu), featuring conformationally rigid 1,3-cyclobutane rings in the backbone. These polyesters not only exhibit superior thermostability (T=376-380 °C) but also demonstrate exceptional hydrolytic resistance with good integrity even after 1 year in basic and acidic aqueous solutions, distinguishing themselves from typical counterparts.

High-Efficiency Mono-Cyclopentadienyl Titanium and Rare-Earth Metal Catalysts for the Production of Syndiotactic Polystyrene.

Syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) refers to a type of thermoplastic material with phenyl substituents that are alternately chirally attached on both sides of an aliphatic macromolecular main chain. Owing to its excellent physical and mechanical properties, as well as its chemical stability, high transparency, and electrical insulation characteristics, SPS is used in a wide variety of technical fields. SPS is commonly produced via the stereoselective transition metal-catalyzed coordination polymerization method mediated by stereospecific catalysts, which consists of anionic mono-cyclopentadienyl derivative η-coordinated single active metal centers (referred to as "mono-Cp'-M"), with active center metals involving Group 4 transition metals (with an emphasis on titanium) and rare-earth (RE) metals of the periodic table.

Functional materials for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding are a consistently hot topic in the booming communication engineering, proceeding the development that tends to the multifunctional EMI shielding materials. Herein, a series of carbonized syndiotactic polystyrene/carbon nanotube/MXene (CsPS/CNT/MXene) hybrid aerogels were fabricated for EMI shielding and solar thermal energy conversion purposes. To fabricate the hybrid aerogels, a porous CNT/MXene framework was initially prepared using freeze-casting.
