We report the first case of Corynebacterium bovis shoulder prosthetic joint infection. The organism was isolated from intraoperative tissue culture and from the removed prosthesis using sonication. A 2-stage exchange and 3 months of antibiotic therapy were performed. C. bovis may cause implant-associated infections, which can manifest as low-grade infection.

A common concern in preclinical cancer research is the introduction of Corynebacterium bovis into immunodeficient mouse colonies through cancer cell lines. C. bovis is a known contaminant of patient-derived xenograft tumors passaged horizontally between immunodeficient mice.

Improved diagnostic capabilities and a desire to reduce or refine the use of animals as soiled bedding sentinels (SBS) have driven interest in developing the use of PCR-based testing methods, such as exhaust dust testing (EDT), for routine rodent health surveillance. We compared the absolute and quantitative PCR results from EDT filters with SBS mice by routine screening via a panel of 19 infectious agents including agents known to be excluded or present in the colony. In this study, EDT and SBS were compared at days 0, 90, and 180 in 3 facilities ( = 12 rooms) with animals housed on IVC racks ( = 19 double-sided and 23 single-sided racks).

infection in biomedical research is synonymous with skin hyperkeratosis of athymic nude mice. This clinical sign can be obvious and is the namesake for 'scaly skin disease.' Other clinical signs that accompany scaly skin, including early presentation, duration, and rate of resolution, are less well known.

Otitis media (OM) in calves, is caused by different bacteria. OM treatment requires identification of etiological agents and antibiotic sensitivity testing. The gold standard method of bacteriological study of OM is tympanocentesis, but using this technique in farm condition would be difficult.

When implementing the transition from regular milk production to the dry period, drying off is mostly conducted simply by abrupt cessation of milking. Efforts to reduce milk synthesis before cessation of milking aim to reduce stress in cows as well as to lower the risk of mastitis. A previous study demonstrated that incomplete milking during the last ten days of lactation gradually reduced the milk yield of healthy, high-yielding cows.
