An inexpensive, harmless, and quick technique of sample preparation followed by a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the simultaneous quantification of trenbolone acetate and 17beta-trenbolone in cattle muscle is presented. Analysis by HPLC with photo-diode array detector was performed using a short C1 column with an isocratic mobile phase. The method was validated by the analyses of spiked samples, resulting recoveries (> or = 87.9%; relative standard deviations < or = 3.4%), analytical total time (< 20 min/sample, where, a batch of 12 samples in 2 h), and quantitation limits (< or = 1.8 ng/g). No harmful organic solvents and reagents were used at all.

The number of beef × dairy animals entering feedlots has increased, but the response of beef × dairy cattle to growth-promoting implants has not been well characterized. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of breed type and implant administration on live performance, carcass characteristics, sera metabolites, and immunohistochemical (IHC) outcomes. Forty-eight steers (average body weight [BW] = 417±22 kg) were sorted by breed into groups of predominantly Angus (B), black-hided beef × primarily Holstein (B×D), or Holstein (D), and half of the steers within each breed type were administered a steroidal implant.

Genetic selection for hyperprolific sows resulted in higher proportion of low birthweight piglets and greater birthweight variation within the litter, increasing preweaning mortality. There is evidence that altrenogest supplementation improves post-weaning reproductive performance through higher ovulation rates, and increased embryo survival. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of altrenogest supplementation during the last week of lactation in primiparous sows on subsequent reproductive performance.

Altrenogest, also known as allyltrenbolone, is a synthetic form of progesterone used therapeutically to suppress unwanted symptoms of estrus in female horses. Altrenogest affects the system by decreasing levels of endogenous gonadotrophin and luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones, which in turn decreases estrogen and mimics the increase of progesterone production. This results in more manageable mares for training and competition alongside male horses while improving the workplace safety of riders and handlers.
