Published: March 2009

Objective: To assess the clinical efficacy and safety of cellulose on functional constipation.

Methods: A prospective, self-controlled, multicenter clinical trial of cellulose was conducted for 2 weeks in 240 patients with functional constipation according to the Rome III( criteria. Symptoms and characters of feces before and after the treatment were observed and evaluated according to a score scheme.

Results: In the 240 patients, the frequencies of defecation increased and the characters of feces was improved significantly after 2-week treatment. There were no adverse reactions observed throughout the clinical trial. The total efficacy was 82.1% at day 7 and 90.7% at day 14. The satisfactory rate of doctors was 83.8% and of patients was 83.8%.

Conclusion: Cellulose is effective and safe in the treatment of chronic functional constipation.

The depletion of fossil resources, coupled with global warming and adverse environmental impact of traditional petroleum-based plastics, have necessitated the discovery of renewable resources and innovative biodegradable materials. Lignocellulosic biomass (LB) emerges as a highly promising, sustainable and eco-friendly approach for accumulating polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), as it completely bypasses the problem of "competition for food". This sustainable and economically efficient feedstock has the potential to lower PHA production costs and facilitate its competitive commercialization, and support the principles of circular bioeconomy.

Simultaneous CO/NO removal from flue gas is extensively attracted to meet the goal of atmospheric pollutant and carbon mitigations. An optimized CaO-CO system via the design of the bio-modified calcium-based pellet is proposed in which the pyrolysis of biomass ensures efficient CO/NO removal. Since the type of biomass shows great influence on the characteristics of pyrolysis products which may influence the behavior of reaction, the correlations of characteristics of biomass structural components, modified Ca-sorbent, and CO/NO removal reactivity were established with the support of experimental results and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation.

Extracting The extraction of cellulose and lignin from biomass is essential for the development of sustainable bio-based materials. This study examines the effects of physical pretreatment techniques-ultrasound (US), pulsed electric fields (PEF), and high-voltage electrical discharges (HVED)-on the efficiency of alkali treatment for cellulose and lignin extraction from walnut shells. The primary objective was to enhance extraction yields and improve extract quality while evaluating the effectiveness of these methods.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a novel biocompatible polymeric biomaterial with a wide range of biomedical uses, like tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds, wound dressings, and drug delivery. Although BC lacks good cell adhesion due to limited functionality, its tunable surface chemistry still holds promise. Here, hydroxyapatite (HA) was incorporated into a citrate-modified BC (MBC) using the biomimetic synthesis in simulated body fluid (SBF).
