Enterovirus myocarditis can be a serious infection in neonates, complicated by cardiac dysfunction and arrhythmias. Although decreased systolic function and ventricular arrhythmias have been reported, there is limited description of significant atrial involvement. We present an unusual series of three infants at our institution with enterovirus myocarditis in the neonatal period associated with atrial arrhythmias and dilation.

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL, USA.
Background: Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle most often caused by viral infections. Sex differences in the immune response during myocarditis have been well described but upstream mechanisms in the heart that might influence sex differences in disease are not completely understood.
Methods: Male and female BALB/c wild type mice received an intraperitoneal injection of heart-passaged coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) or vehicle control.

Group B Coxsackieviruses (CVBs) consist of six serotypes, CVB1 to CVB6, which can clinically affect the heart, brain, liver, pancreas and other organs, causing myocarditis, encephalitis, myelitis, pancreatitis, hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) and other diseases, and can even lead to death. CVBs are widespread globally and highly contagious. However, there are currently no approved CVB vaccines or effective treatments.

Background: Viral myocarditis (VMC) plays a significant role in heart failure, and there is currently a shortage of available targeted treatments. Macrophage phenotype and function are closely associated with the beta-2 adrenergic receptor (β2-AR).
Method: This research employed a BALB/c mouse model of VMC generated using Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), and the β2-AR agonist formoterol was administered as treatment.

Mounting evidence suggests that the gut-heart axis is critical in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. The gut serves as the primary pathway through which Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infects its host, leading to acute viral myocarditis (AVMC). However, little is known about the role of gut microflora and its metabolites in the development of AVMC.

Coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6) is a primary pathogen associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and is typified by fever, rashes or herpetic lesions at distinct locations. Although HFMD patients exhibit mild symptoms, a subset of patients may develop severe complications, such as viral encephalitis, myocarditis, pneumonia, and neurological disorders. However, in addition to rodent models, such as the CVA6-infected mouse model, no definitive nonhuman primate animal model or related research or analysis tool is available, which makes the development of suitable nonhuman primate animal models particularly crucial.
