Background: Management of orbital and mid-facial fractures requires a thorough ophthalmic evaluation and precise imaging. A principle goal of therapy is to anatomically reduce fracture segments and to restore a normal orbital volume as soon as possible. Diagnostic advances such as new surgical and imaging techniques have dramatically improved both the functional and aesthetic outcome of reconstructions.

Methods: Orbital reconstruction is performed using computer-assisted navigation. This technique makes preoperative simulation by mirroring the unaffected side onto the affected side.

Results: Results from computer-assisted navigation application to both primary and secondary orbital and mid-facial reconstruction are shown.

Conclusion: Navigation technique it offers significant advantages in both primary and secondary reconstructions. Navigation facilitates reconstruction in unilateral defects through mirroring techniques, and in bilateral defects by importing virtual models from standard CT datasets improving the software tool to fulfil the need for maxillofacial surgery reconstruction.

The Incidence and Aetiology of Maxillofacial Trauma and Concomitant Traumatic Brain Injury in a Johannesburg Tertiary Hospital.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Objective: To investigate the incidence and etiology of maxillofacial trauma (MFT) and its association with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Background: Anecdotal evidence suggests that there is an association between MFT and TBI and that higher incidences of TBI are associated with frontal bone and mid-facial fractures. Despite the large volume of maxillofacial facial fractures treated in the authors' unit, no study has been undertaken to establish the relationship between TBI and maxillofacial fractures.

The Orbitomalar Ligament: A Cleavage Plane in Oculofacial Trauma.

Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg

December 2024

Section of Ophthalmology, Department of Surgery.

We describe an oculofacial injury phenotype manifesting as a cleavage plane following the orbitomalar ligament in 5 cases. Across these cases, curvilinear wounds followed the course of the orbitomalar ligament, running clean planes through orbicularis oculi down to the infraorbital rim and arcus marginalis. One case involved bilateral orbitomalar ligaments, and 1 case involved the inferior canaliculus.

Ameloblastic Carcinoma With Orbital Invasion.

Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg

November 2024

Discipline of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Adelaide.

Ameloblastic carcinomas are malignant tumors arising from the odontogenic epithelium and defined as having features of ameloblastic differentiation in addition to cytological features of malignancy. Orbital involvement is rare and generally involves invasion of the orbital floor, apex, or soft tissue. This report describes an advanced presentation of ameloblastic carcinoma with orbital invasion and provides a review of the literature.

Augmented reality filters for iris positioning in orbital prosthesis: A clinical report.

J Prosthet Dent

October 2023

Professor, Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College, Hospital & Research Institute, Ludhiana, India.

Mid-facial defects involving the eye can result in severe emotional and psychological trauma for the affected individual, apart from the loss of vision. Prosthetic rehabilitation with an orbital prosthesis can camouflage such defects when surgical treatments are limited. The fabrication of an orbital prosthesis requires precise positioning of the iris for an optimal esthetic outcome.

Objective: Falls frequently cause globe and adnexal trauma, particularly in the elderly. The morbidity decreases confidence, independence and quality of life. We aimed to improve the understanding of fall-related globe and adnexal trauma and the involvement of ophthalmology at two tertiary trauma centres.
