The operative mortality rate after surgery for colorectal carcinoma remains significant. A series of 578 patients has been studied prospectively. The features which most significantly affect operative mortality are the age of the patient, a history of loss of weight, limited preoperative patient mobility and the presence of intestinal obstruction with perforation of the bowel. By identifying high-risk groups of patients, attention may be focused on particular patients at risk, in order to reduce operative mortality.

Background: Obesity is a predisposing factor for serious comorbidities, particularly those related to elevated cardiovascular mortality. The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) has been shown to be a useful indicator of patients with insulin resistance.
Aims: The aim of this study was to assess cardiovascular risk before and after surgical treatment of obesity.

This article aims to identify the relationship between material deprivation and mortality from breast, cervical, and prostate neoplasms in the Brazilian adult population and the relationship between ethnicity/skin color and material deprivation. This cross-sectional ecological study calculated the mean mortality rate per 100,000 inhabitants, and deaths were standardized by age and gender and redistributed per to ill-defined causes, stratified by age group and ethnicity/skin color. We applied the Negative Binomial model, containing the interaction between ethnicity/skin color and the Brazilian Deprivation Index (IBP).

Objective: To define the incidence of ventriculostomy-associated infections and their impact on the mortality and functional outcomes of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Methods: We prospectively included all consecutive adult aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients admitted to the neurological intensive care units of the Instituto Estadual do Cérebro Paulo Niemeyer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Hospital Cristo Redentor (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) who required external ventricular drains from July 2015 to December 2020. Daily clinical and laboratory variables were collected at admission and during the hospital stay.
