Removal of the olfactory bulbs (BX) of rats or mice lengthens the circadian period of locomotor activity. In golden hamsters, BX elevates serum gonadotropin levels of hamsters maintained in long or short photoperiod and prevents the testicular regression associated with short days without altering the secretion or action of pineal melatonin. The present study examined the influence of BX on circadian wheel-running activity in hamsters and tested whether this effect was related to changes in serum testosterone levels. BX lengthened the free-running period of locomotor activity in gonadally intact hamsters by a mean of 21.0 min, and BX had a similar effect in orchidectomized animals with or without testosterone replacement. These results suggest that the olfactory bulbs normally tend to increase the frequency of the hamster's circadian oscillator and that this effect is unrelated to altering gonadal steroid levels.

This study aimed to characterize the triple-hit schizophrenia-like model rats (Wisket) by the assessment of (1) behavioral parameters in different test conditions (reward-based Ambitus test and HomeManner system) for a prolonged period, (2) cerebral muscarinic M1 receptor (M1R) expression, and (3) the effects of olanzapine treatment on these parameters. Wistar (control) and Wisket rats were injected for three consecutive weeks with olanzapine depot (100 mg/kg) and spent 4 weeks in large cages with environmental enrichment (HomeManner). The vehicle-treated Wisket rats spent longer time awake with decreased grooming activity compared to controls, without changes in their active social behavior (sniffing, playing, fighting) obtained in HomeManner.

Previously, we showed that transplantation of cortical interneurons derived from the medial ganglionic eminence (MGE) opens a robust period of ocular dominance plasticity 33-35 days after transplantation into neonatal host visual cortex. The plasticity can be induced by transplanting either PV or SST MGE-derived cortical interneurons; it requires transplanted interneurons to express the vesicular GABAergic transporter; and it is manifested by changes to the host visual circuit.

Opioid dependence is defined by an aversive withdrawal syndrome upon drug cessation that can motivate continued drug-taking, development of opioid use disorder, and precipitate relapse. An understudied but common opioid withdrawal symptom is disrupted sleep, reported as both insomnia and daytime sleepiness. Despite the prevalence and severity of sleep disturbances during opioid withdrawal, there is a gap in our understanding of their interactions.
